EB24 about League of Legends #6 Current meta + Itemization, Patch 9.23 - from the Boosters perspective

With the newest patch, a lot of things have changed on the meta and on the game itself. Now, more than ever is very important to know what to pick and why. On this blog post, we'll be providing you a guide written by our boosters fort each role, a detailed blog that will help you be updated of this new meta and what you can use in your advantage to win as many games as possible.

  • Top

The current state of Top lane this patch is lower than the previous seasons because of the removal of Spear of Shojin and other champions getting stronger. On this meta, Renekton and Jax are no longer S tier picks because you can't carry solo if you don't get a very good power spike such as: not being able to get a solo kill or 50 cs advantage at least in 20 min.

Tier List for Top lane this patch

1. Why are these champions in S tier?

These champs scale very well and also some of them have no counterplay on the laning phase, for example, Gangplank has no counterplay and his power spike needs only 700 gold after he gets his Sapphire Crystal.

Also, Kayle has an unstoppable scale after reaching level 11 and only needs to get 1 item (Hextech Gunblade).

Tryndamere only needs Sanguine Blade to become a beast and Fiora is on S-tier because of Spear of Shojin was removed and the champions that used to build Spear of Shojin can't defeat her any more.

2. Why are these champions in A tier?

It is simple, these champs have a very good early power spike and if we agree 4 dragon equals to a win if you have any of these champions. The reason for this is the good laning push on the early-game and a good teleport reaction.

Also Camille has a different scaling from the rest but is also harder to play with it compared with the rest of the A-tier champions.

These are just a few reasons why these champions are on these specific tiers, we'll explain later in more detail.

Builds for the S-tier champions

1. Kayle:

Core items: Hextech Gunblade + Nashor's Tooth

The other 4 items will depend on the enemy's team composition (if they are a full ad or a full ap team or if they have a lot of CC or not)

2. Gangplank:

Core items: Trinity Force + Sterak's Gage

The rest of the items are the same as Kayle and will also be situational from game to game.

3. Trydamere:

Best build: Sanguine Blade > Statikk Shiv > Infinity Edge > Guardian Angel

Reasons behind the S-tier list

First of all, Gangplank and Tryndamere have a good sustain, good early damage, good stats and also these 2 champs have a good power spike once they get their core items.

For example, when you pick Gangplank and you buy Sheen, your Q will deal double damage and also when you complete your Trinity Force, you're getting maximum damage with your barrels that already have 60% armor penetration.

For Tryndamere, his early laning phase is a bit hard against ranged champions but don't forget that you will max q first and that will give you straight up more AD and sustain. Once you get to level 6, make sure to dive your opponent range champion but firstly you should stack your fury to the maximum and if you get Sanguine Blade first with Berserker's Greaves or Ninja Tabi boots, you will get a lot of attack speed. Also, your passive has 35% critical chance so that means you will be unstoppable for a 1v1 - that's why Tryndamere is an S-tier champion at the moment.

Ryze, Kayle and Fiora are also S-tier champions even if though they have a really weak early-game, their strength is that they scale very very well. Even if you die once or twice in the laning phase, your scale will overcome that very easily.

What you should do to try and scale as fat as possible is to farm very much and try to get your core items as soon as possible. Once you have your core items, there's no way you can lose a 1v1.

For example, if you were playing Kayle and after getting Hextech Gunblade and being level 6, you will get a lot of range which will allow you to kite easily and get your passive activated, which gives you 7% movement speed and good amount of attack speed. In case you go for Hybrid Damage, you can also get an active slow item and if you kite well when doing a 1v1, there's no chance to lose it.

As Fiora, once you get your core items, you will get a very good amount of life steal and your passive will provide you even more life steal and true damage too.

As Ryze with Conqueror and Seraph's Embrace you can spam your skill shots almost constantly and when your conqueror is stacked, there's no chance to lose a 1v1 because you will get 15% life steal so that means when you will be able to spam your skill shots and get your HP back each time you make a trade.

Reasons behind the A-tier list

Renekton, Camille, Jayce, and Shen are very good at 1v1. For instance, when you play Renekton against melee champions, you will be able to do good trades in the early-game. All you need to do is try to poke with your Q and an auto-attack, then you go back with your E. With these trades, you will be able to win your lane since the enemy top laner will not have enough sustain as you do. Once you get your Tiamat, you should push with your Q and use the Tiamat active. You should try to roam and help your jungler get the scuddle on the river. When you get to level 6, you will be tankier because the level up will give you +30-60 magic damage per second and +250 HP level 1 ultimate so there is no chance to lose trades.

About Camille, her passive gives you the option to do good trades and also be able to scale after getting your 2 core items. Camille's laning phase can be a bit hard but your passive gives you a big shield so use it wisely when trading and don't forget to auto-attack or Q to enemy champion and after that, you will be able to do good trades until the shield is gone. But even without your shield, your E gives you a lot of attack speed and also stuns the enemy while dealing damage.

Talking about Shen now. His laning phase is very easy because when you want to trade, you'll be getting a shield every time and your Q deals a very good amount of magic damage. You almost deal hybrid damage with Shen and your best point in the game is when you get your Titanic Hydra. This happens because Shen's basic ad damage is lower than other champions and you must go tank for your team.

Since you'll be the tank of the team, having 1 damage item is good for tanks and it also helps you pushing the lane since you don't have that much attack speed nor damage.

You must buy Tiamat as soon as possible so you can push your lane faster and use your R whenever it's needed. Having this pressure on your lane will allow you to also have more presence in the game and react faster to any engagement or team fight.

Now it's time to talk about Jax. Jax is incredibly good at scaling but his laning phase is extremely hard when you're playing against ranged champions like Jayce, Kennen, and even Vayne top. So be sure to not pick Jax if you're the first pick on champions select, but even if you do and need to play against these matches, you should only use your E defensively until you get your Trinity Force. Once you have your core item, you'll be able to kill them all.

Jax's laning phase is mostly hard against all matches so you should start with E first and max W all the time because your W gives you a lot of damage with Sheen or Trinity. Always play your lane with vision and if you get ganked by the enemy jungler, you'll be able to use your wards and jump to it. If you want to do 1v1 be sure to stack your passive with minions first!

Jayce has 8 abilities so that makes him a bit harder to play in comparison to other champions like Jax or Camille that only have 4 abilities. Jayce can be ranged or melee and that is actually a great thing about him.

Playing with the ranged version, you should poke the enemy top laner but don't forget that Jayce has a really weak basic stats, so when you want to trade with the enemy make sure to pay attention to the enemy minions so they don't focus you when you are about to trade. If you get focused by the minions, you'll lose way more HP, to avoid the minions aggro, you should try to go in the bush and try to do trades like, for example, auto E-Q auto w and run to the bush.

You should change your gun version and switch to the melee version if you want to execute the enemy. You should do this because your hammer deals much more damage than with the ranged version. Your next first basic attack and your E allows you to kill your opponent in case he is with low HP.

Lastly, for Kled you should poke/harass as much as possible with your Q. DO NOT TRADE WHILE W IS ON COOLDOWN. Trade when W is up, run away when it's down. E is your escape, do not mindlessly use it just to get an extra auto. Only use it offensively if you are going all-in.

Kled is good at tower diving with a minion wave, because during dismount he is gets untargetable and will lose tower aggro. Also, he gets an "extra" ability in being able to use his pistol after dismounting. Remember, while dismounted Kled gets a ton of movement speed towards champions, and also has an extra-long range melee attack (specifically +125 range). This helps you auto more easily when you are dismounted, which builds up your courage.

  • Jungler

Jungle is the most overpowered role in soloq right now due to the camps respawn changes and all the neutral camp base stat nerfs. You can play every champ and every class in jungle right now and that makes your lanes less important.

Ok but what exactly happened on 9.23?

Gromp was buffed so you can be level 3 with 3 camps. That means you don't have to start at red and go to Krugs every game. Also, they removed the first clear penalty on Krugs. Herald and Drakes do less damage and have less resist also, herald spawns two times now. In this patch, we can either play on top or bot side regardless of the prio since there is no punishment for not taking Krugs.

  • Why this tier list?

Low base stats on jungle camps, lowered respawn timers means Graves and Nidalee will be on the stage. I also placed Ekko and Lee Sin on S tier because they are overbuffed. Nocturne is super good with a new item called Sanguine Blade and has a decent clear speed. I usually pick him if the enemy team has +2 split pushers. Rek'Sai is a unique pick for me but I think it's still playable for anyone. Her scaling and clear speed is abnormally high. Kha'Zix is on the list too because of the jungle camp resist nerfs. Although Nimbus Cloak rework affected him a little bit, he is still good with R evolved. Ornn is very good if you want to play a tank jungler. He doesn't need aftershock and his passive makes him the best tank in the game.

  • Mid

Still after the big changes on the rift, the playstyle one Mid-lane didn’t change a lot, but the meaning is increasing.

The first and most important thing at current stage of meta is to push mid-lane as fast as you can to roam (always bot) or disappear to secure vision/objectives. What has the biggest influence now are the 2 objectives: herald and drake. After drake changes, as of mid laner, you either have to be able to assassinate someone before the objectives or have to be the cc and DPS player in team fights for an objective.

Another change that mix a lot is the new conqueror and new lethality items. That make the champions who use them much better and rank them up quickly in mid pick ladder. Lethalithy items give us now the choice what to build vs different comps or champions, they give us the opportunity to adjust and be more flexible.

When we sum up all those things we can easily create a tier list:

The champions I would like to highlight are:

    - Conqueror Ryze – quickly pushing, great roaming and high damage champion

    - Conqueror Cassio - great in team fights, has cc and a lot of DPS

    - Electrocute Qiyana – great in dragon pit/herald pit, good roaming

Items for Mid lane

Items for mid-lane are quite similar:

For AP champions:

- Archangel's Staff & Rod of Ages

- Luden's Echo

- Morellonomicon

- Zhonya's Hourglass

- Hextech Gunblade (Katarina/Akali)

- Hextech Protobelt-01 (Ekko/Vlad)

- Liandry's Torment (Situational)

- Rylai's Crystal Scepter (Cassio/Aurelion)

For AD champions:

Lethality items are very optional so if you are ahead, you should go for:

- Youmuu's Ghostblade & Duskblade of Draktharr and finish with GA or Last Whisper

If not:

Duskblade of Draktharr & Edge of Night / Sanguine Blade

Runes for Mid lane

The runes for mid laners are also very similar and very situational so here are the most common the best ones you should be using:

1. Runes #1:

First Rune: Domination

Going for:

- Electrocute

- Sudden Impact

- Eyeball Collection

- Ravenous Hunter

Second Rune: Inspiration

- Biscuit Delivery

- Time Warp Tonic

2. Runes #2:

First Rune: Precision

Going for:

- Conqueror

- Presence of Mind

- Legend: Tenacity

- Coup de Grace

Second Rune: Domination

- Taste of Blood

- Ravenous Hunter

  • ADC

The current state of ADC is really good, bot, as a lane has a huge impact because of the new Drakes' System and Herald, isn't that strong anymore. In-game, drakes are really important and they're easy to take by junglers, most of the teams want to have a strong early-game bot lane, that's why most hyper-carry champions like Kog'maw and Vayne look pretty bad at the moment.

That's why most junglers are focusing bot lane, because if you can get your bot lane ahead in the lane and also take drakes then it becomes a good win condition. Also, we can add the fact that a lot of the supports played on the bot lane can roam a lot. These supports like Thresh, Pyke, and Nautilus can get your bot lane ahead and then they can roam and help the whole team getting ahead. Even if your lose the first herald, because your jungler was focused on the bot side, then around 15-17 min you can take herald with your bot lane. After that, you'll be really hard to stop.

1. Why are these champions in S tier?

I will be explaining each champion individually why while also telling you the best items for them.

- Caitlyn:

She is strong early, fits really well with aggressive supports with CC, her traps help a lot in fights for drakes and she doesn't fall off in the late game.

Itemization for Caitlyn:

Most of players go Stormrazor > Infinity Edge > Rapid Fire Cannon, with this build, you deal a lot of burst damage that fits really good with supports that can CC like Nautilus, Pyke, Thresh and Morgana.

Caitlyn feels really good in team comps that have a strong front lane who won't allow enemy champions get to her. This way she can use her great range to kill the enemies for free.

- Kai'Sa:

She is also nice on early-game, she may go AD/AP, adapting to the damage that the team needs and is also very mobile in the late-game.

If your team needs AP damage, then you should build:

Manamune > Guinsoo's > Nashoor Tooth's > Zhonya's

If your team needs AD damage, then you should build:

Stormrazor > Guinsoo > Hurricane (More damage) / Phantom Dancer (More Defensive) / Nashoor Tooth (More AP Damage)

Kai'Sa feels great in team comps that have too much AD damage, because she is the only ADC that with a good build, does more AP than AD. She is better than other ADC's in team comp against assassins because of her invisibility on E and shield/dash on R.

- Lucian:

Also strong early. He fits great with aggressive supports, his burst is very strong at early levels and is also mobile.

His first two items are always the same (BOTRK and Essence Reaver):

Botrk > Essence Reaver > Rapid Fire Cannon (Extra Range/some damage)/ Infinity Edge (Gives you a lot of damage) / Phantom Dancer (More Defensive)

You want to pick Lucian when you have aggressive support and you want to dominate bot lane and make the maximum pressure for your jungler to take drakes.

2. Why are these champions in A tier?

I will be explaining each champion individually why while also telling you the best items for them.

- Jhin:

Good early-game, with his R he can engage fights and deal damage even from a bad position and also has good burst.

As Jhin you always go Stormrazor first > Rapid Fire Cannon > Infinity Edge. These 3 core items will give you everything you need!

Jhin is a champion who makes ganks really viable thanks to his root on W that can proc with anyone and thanks to his R that gives damage and slows the enemy, also by placing traps it makes him good since you can create a vision with it and/or avoid getting ganked.

He fits in the same team comps as Caitlyn, strong front lane is what he needs.

- Xayah:

Good Early, Great Burst, Unkillable with her R

Xayah's build is really simple: Essence Reaver for mana > Rapid Fire Cannon> Infinity Edge

Xaya is an ADC that you mostly want to pick up with Rakan. With Rakan, she may be close to the S-tier ADC's; without it, she may be the worst of the A-tier, Rakan gives so much value to Xayah that no one can't do.

Xayah's problem may be controlling the mana and skills, she is very strong with her skills ready, but without it she is really bad, not having any passive that makes her auto attacks stronger and also has a bad range (525).

- Miss Fortune:

Great Early, Good Burst, Her R is one of the strongest ADC's R that can save team fights.

Most of the High Elo players, when playing Miss Fortune go for 3-4 Doran's Blade on early games (a lot of HP, life steal and damage) that makes you unkillable in the lane and after it Essence Reaver > Infinity Edge > Rapid Fire Cannon.

Miss Fortune is an ADC that has a lot of damage that you have to know how to use. Her skill set makes short trades really good, she can poke very well with her Q, trying to hit it on low HP minions and making it bounce it to enemy's champions and dealing a lot of damage. Her R deals a sick amount of damage, but you aren't mobile so it can also make you an easy target and kill.

- Draven:

Great Early, Sick amount of damage, Passive gives you gold

As Draven, you go Bloodthirster > Infinity Edge > Rapid Fire Cannon (Extra Range is great on draven) / Phantom Dancer (More Defensive)

Draven is the type of ADC that is kinda only for mains/OTP, it's not for people to plays him from once in a while. He requires a lot of games to be mastered, probably making him the hardest ADC right now. He is very fun to play if you can control his axes and literally 2 shot the enem's ADC, but it's not that easy to control axes in team fights and stay alive at the same time.

- Senna:

Great Scaling, very good skill setup (Heal/damage, CC, Skill that makes your unclickable, Global ultimate that can do damage and heal)

Manamune > Duskblade > Youmuu's (sometimes people go youmuu's before duskblade if you need that extra mobility)

Senna is more seen as a support, but as ADC, she feels really good too. She is not that strong early, but her passive makes her really good and the fact that she has a lot of skills that help your teammates, can make her feels great in the late game while you can help your teammates and deal damage at the same time.

Situational Items

After every 3/4 items, ADC's have to go for situational items, those items are:

1. Maw of Malmortius:

Great Item vs Strong Mages or AP Assassins (Syndra, Evelynn, Leblanc) gives you AD, CD and MR, also has a really strong passive that gives life steal, spell vamp and more AD.

2. Phantom Dancer:

Gives a shield for both types of damage (AP and AD) gives AS/Crit/MS, works just like Maw Of Malmortius, but doesn't give the passive with life steal/spell vamp and AD.

Also in-game, you can build only Maw Of Malmortius OR Phantom Dancer, because both of these items have the same unique passive so only one will work.

3. Guardian Angel:

Item that respawns you with 50% of your base HP after you die, risky item, sometimes it can save your game, but sometimes it can be totally useless, because the enemy team can setup everything until you get revived.

Before you get this item, you have to build stopwatch that is also a great defensive item if use it well and it's also really cheap (600g) so going for stopwatch and then GA, gives you some chance to not getting killed in crucial moments of the game.

4. Zhonya's:

This item is only good for Kai'Sa and Ezreal, because it gives AP/CD/ARMOR, nothing else. But like I said above, the active may sometimes save your game when you use it correctly, also you need to go for stopwatch before you build it.

5. Quicksilver Sash:

Removes one CC, gives 30 MR, costs 1300 and you buy Mercurial Scimitar from it. You get bonus 50% ms after using it on the full item. Also, the full item gives AD/Life steal/MR making it a very important item vs teams with a lot of CC and also vs CC that you never wanna get (Skarner, Malzahar, Warwick, Mordekaiser (You can QSS his R), Leona and many others) can't QSS knock up until you will use QSS and then instantly flash or dash.

If you don't need defensive items, then your choice may be:

- Bloodthirster:

Gives 80 AD, a lot of life steal, shield if you are full HP, good choice on champions that need life steal and damage.

- Lord Dominik's Regards:

Gives 45 AD, 35% armor pen, a great item on ADC that doesn't have any kind of passive/skill that helps them killing tanks (Vayne W, Kai'Sa Passive, Kog'Maw W)

- Mortal Reminder:

Very similar item to Lord Dominik, but only gives 25% Armor Pen. Physical Damage gives Grievous Wounds on enemy champions for 5 seconds (Grievous Wounds makes self heals, heals 40% less effective)

- Another Crit item:

This only applies if you have Infinity Edge, it can be:

- Statikk Shiv:

AS, MS, Crit Deals 120 Magic Damage to 7 targets when energized

- Rapid Fire Cannon:

AS, MS, Crit Gives Extra Range 35% bonus range, max 150, also 120 Magic damage on hit

- Stormrazor:

AD, AS, Crit Deals 120 Magic Damage, slows the target by 75% for 0,5

Runes for ADC

The first option for runes, for ADC like Kai'Sa, Lucian, Miss Fortune, Tristana, Vayne, Draven is:

First Rune: Precision

Going for:

- Press the Attack

- Triumph

- Legend: Alacrity

- Coup de Grace

Second Rune: Inspiration

- Magical Footwear

- Biscuit Delivery

These runes are good for most ADC's because it gives you a lot of damage coming from Press The Attack and Coup de Grace. You'll also be getting bonus attack speed from Legend: Alacrity and Triumph will give you some gold and HP after you get a kill or assist.

Thanks to these runes, you have a better early because of Magical Footwear makes you save 300g on boots and getting biscuits that are very useful in the early-game.

Sometimes you can change Legend: Alacrity for Legend: Bloodline, when in your build, you don't have a place for life steal, but you need it (you're losing some early power)

ADC's like Xayah, Jinx, Ashe, Sivir will most likely use these runes:

First Rune: Precision

Going for:

- Lethal Tempo

- Triumph

- Legend: Alacrity

- Coup de Grace

Second Rune: Inspiration

- Magical Footwear

- Biscuit Delivery

It fits really well with Hyper carry champions, these runes scale extremely well and it's much better than Press The Attack, but that also means that with these runes you may have a hard time on the laning phase due to Lethal Tempo not being that good on early stages of the game, where Press The Attack is way better.

These third runes are most appropriately for ADC's like Caitlyn, Jhin and Senna:

First Rune: Precision

Going for:

- Fleet Footwork

- Triumph

- Legend: Bloodline

- Coup de Grace

Second Rune: Inspiration

- Magical Footwear

These are very good for ADC that lack mobility or for ADC's that can't use Lethal Tempo that well. Thanks to Fleet Footwork, you can poke more easily as Caitlyn or Jhin, also these champions don't require a lot of attack speed. Because of that you can have additional life steal instead of attack speed which gives you great sustainability in the lane. You can also consider taking Overheal instead of Triumph on hard matchups.

The current state of the meta in the bot lane is trying to win the lane early. Whoever controls the lane in the bot lane, most likely will get better control in river for drakes too. Since drakes are so important now whit the soul buff, every single one of them is worth fighting most of the time. Also, tank engage supports are are the moment the strongest followed by ranged poke supports.

Essentially, support and jungler are the most important roles since both of them can control the jungle and drakes. Since the Targon's sustain nerfs, you need to think better about how you trade in lane whether how much poke you can take or when you should hard engage. Out of the 3 items, you should choose either the full AP item or the AD HP item since I don't think the AP HP item is as strong as the other 2. Also, since you no longer need to invest gold to the support items, you are free to invest immediately to either the normal build or essential lane items to survive the laning phase like upgraded pots or Doran's Shield.

In conclusion, the current meta requires early game champions with the power to dominate the lane as soon as possible, and tank supports provide both control early and hard engage in the bot lane, to not only win the lane but also control the river and drakes, which are so important in the early meta

The duo jungler-support is probably the strongest solo queue duo followed by support-ADC at the moment.

1. Why are these champions in S tier?

Hard engage, easy control in the lane as soon as you get to level 2 and the best supports to roam with. Since they provide hard CC and decent damage while also being pretty tanky in the early-game with Aftershock and their natural tank stats. If you combine all of this with a good jungler and ADC, you can take over games.

2. Why are these champions in A tier?

Also good when it comes to roaming and in lane. The main problem with these champions is that they are not as tanky as the S-tier, so they have a hard time in lane vs S-tier champions. But even with that small issue, if you work with your jungler and ADC properly in the early-game and outplay them on trades or rotations, you can take over the game. Picking these champions only makes it a bit harder to pull off on squishy champions.

Itemization for Support

Most champions share the same build since they are mostly tanky engage ones. Here's the core items:

- Zeke's, Knights vow, Solari and Redemption:

They are cheap, reliable and cost efficient items for any support tank you get. Both armor magic resist, CDR and HP from them plus the actives are really good at any point in the game.

Usually for the lane on S tier champions, you should start with Steel Shoulderguards since it gives you both HP and AD, unlike Spectral Sickle, you will need every extra HP you can get on S-tier picks, I value the HP more over the AD.

Zeke's is the main item for any engage support since it gives your armor, magic resistance, cdr and mana, plus the active on the ultimate link is really nice for both damage and control, while the Knight's Vow is specifically for the armor HP bonus and the damage share link.

Solari is great for the magic resistances and the shield. I usually prefer Solari after 1 of the other 2 items are complete.

Runes for Support

The runes for the meta supports is very standard since most of them will share the same runes, here's the best runes you can use:

First Rune: Resolve

Going for:

- Aftershock

- Font of Life

- Bone Plating

- Unflinching

Second Rune: Inspiration

- Biscuit Delivery

- Cosmic Insight
