OSRS Account Recovery and Best Security Practices

OSRS Account Recovery and Best Security Practices

If you're not aware of it by now, OSRS has a strict ToS (terms of service) policy that frowns heavily upon account trading. This means people caught buying and selling accounts for whatever reason face the strong potential of bans and suspensions. If this doesn't deter you, then understand you may encounter account disputes and recovery issues. There's also security practices you should know about.

Jagex Account Security Features

For account security, use a strong password according to what Jagex requires. The more complicated, the better. Ideally, you'd want to document that password where only you have access to it.

Another security feature is account recovery options. This entails questions and email management only one player (we're assuming it's you) should know about. There's also account status monitoring where you can check your account's logs. Should you find any fishy activity, this is where you're most likely to find it.

Recovery Question Management

Your recovery questions help secure your OSRS account. Pick those that are not so easy for people to guess. It should be as uniquely you as possible. These should be private enough where only you know the answers to them. Never, ever, share such info with anyone, not even your best friend. Hey, we're talking about protecting yourself, no matter what. Should you feel these are somehow compromised, go back and make changes. Again, this is for the sake of your protection.

Email & Account Security

Use a dedicated gaming email address for gaming accounts. Keeping one separate from your regular email address helps protect you from phishing programs, scams, and other security threats. Should you do so, make sure to use strong encryption, spam filtering, and suspicious activity notifications.

Using 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication)

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, away from intenet jargon for years, you've likely heard of 2FA. That's an acronym for two-factor authentication. It's used to boost account security, acting like a "show your identity" mechanism to prove it's really you accessing your account information. Apps for these are easy enough to come by. It's also recommended to store authenticator backup codes where only you know about them.

What About Account Disputes?

Even if you've done everything "by the book" regarding your account, there is the possibility of facing a dispute. What are these, exactly? Usually, it's a misunderstanding between the parties involved whenever an account has been bought, sold, or traded between them. There's also the possibility Jagex noticed something "off" and has placed an account restriction. Either way, these issues can be dealt with as long as you keep your cool.

If you need to contact Jagex support through their website, you'll have to verify the account's details that they'd have on record. To recover your account, follow the site's procedures. These will likely include recovery questions and account-related details. As you do so, document everything. This will help.

Now, if you purchased an OSRS account from a seller, NEVER admit to Jagex about this. Their ToS warns about such a practice and will ban you. You won't have a legal leg to stand on and you'll lose the account permanently. Should you encounter this precarious position, approach the matter as if you're simply doing a routine security check on your account and wanted to make some changes to it. It's not unusual for people to do such a thing as they're often encouraged by even Jagex to do so.
