League of Legends Ranks Evolution: From Iron to Emerald - A New Era of Competition

Since 2010, League of Legends has come up with a number of competitive ranks between Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and now Emerald.  In addition to these, there are three Apex Tiers, namely Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger.  More than sixty percent of the players tend to sit at either the Bronze or Silver levels.

The majority of the LoL players sitting at the Silver level are deemed as above average, at least according to Riot Games.  Among those at the Gold level, they’re considered to be significantly above average.  In order to achieve a rank as high as Diamond, the gamer required an exceptional track record as one of LoL’s best players.

Now with Emerald as a new rank, Riot Games intends to round out the tier levels among its entire player base.  The ranks heaviest affected this sits between Gold and Diamond.  To be more specific, Emerald will be a rank placed between Platinum and Diamond.  Doing so suggests the new rank will represent a fairly similar percentage of players currently sitting at the Platinum level.

Going into the July 2023 season of League of Legends, Riot Games opted to make a series of changes in the quest to improve the overall gameplay experience for its roster of gamers.  This includes significant changes to the placement games.  Instead of winning ten games to rank up, players now only need five.

Riot Games has also done away with the promotion series where League of Legends is concerned.  For many players, this is a welcome change.  Now that the pressure to play so many placement games per season just to rank up has eased off, this makes playing LoL more enjoyable.

At the same time, the idea of a new rank thrown between Platinum and Diamond has met with mixed reactions.  However, Riot Games insists this change will help deal with a problem they observed with LoL’s ranking system.  For them, it is too bottom-heavy.  The idea was for players ranging between Iron to Silver to be regarded as below-average players.  Players ranked gold and up would be average and above.

The idea behind Emerald is to split the players between Platinum and Diamond in a manner that shouldn’t negatively impact those already sitting at the Diamond rank.  When looking at this from a chart-style perspective, Emerald takes away the stark contrast found between a tiny cluster of Iron-ranked players compared to those sitting at the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels.  With Emerald in place, the ranking system is better rounded out.

While Iron will still have about five percent of players that are ranked at the bottom, all the ranks between Bronze to Emerald will sit between fifteen to twenty percent each.  From there, the percentage of Diamond and Apex Tier players ranked at those levels remains between one percent to five percent.

Change Is Good

The installment of Emerald as a rank by Riot Games played an essential role in keeping the gaming interest of League of Legends going.  With new games coming and going that threaten to dethrone LoL as one of the most popular massive online multiplayer games going, the importance to keep players interested should be every developer’s top priority.

Each time Riot Games patches its games, the expectations from members of the gaming community are high.  When they find certain changes made that seem to damage their favorite game more than fix it, they waste no time voicing their complaints.  When change is good, at least in their eyes, then this encourages them to stick to something they enjoy playing.

League of Legends has been running as a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game since 2009.  Since then, it has become so much more than a game.  It has become an important figure in pop culture as fans have done more than just design their favorite characters in the name of competitive gameplay.

In order to stay on top as a fun game that keeps a steady player base, there is a need for positive changes.  These changes are also needed in order to win over new players, as well as entice former players to come back.  What Emerald seems to offer is more than just a new rank.  It offers a better layout, which is exactly what Riot Games wanted all along.
