Ezreal LoL Classic Build: Trinity Force First, and Why Life Steal Quints Are Not a Meme

Trinity Force Ezreal is one of those builds that looks like a relic until you read the ability text, and then it looks like the obvious answer. Mystic Shot applies on hit effects. That is the entire build in five words, and everything below is just the consequence of that one line.

This is the Ezreal I have been playing in League Classic: Trinity Force first item, Berserker's Greaves, and then a completely standard marksman finish. No Iceborn, no Muramana detour, no clever theorycrafting. Just the item that pays you for casting on a champion who never stops casting.

TL;DR: Marks of Attack Damage, Seals of Armor, Glyphs of Magic Resist, Quintessences of Life Steal, 21 offense and 9 utility. Trinity Force, Berserker's Greaves, The Bloodthirster, Infinity Edge, Last Whisper, then Phantom Dancer or a defensive item. Max Q, then E, then W.

The Old Kit

Key

Ability

Numbers that matter

P

Rising Spell Force

10% Attack Speed per enemy hit by an ability, 5 second duration, stacking to 5 for 50% Attack Speed.

Q

Mystic Shot

30 to 50 mana, cooldown 6 down to 4 seconds, 1200 range. 40/65/90/115/140 (+120% AD) physical damage, applies on hit effects, and reduces the current cooldown of every ability by 1 second on hit.

W

Essence Flux

80 to 120 mana, 10 second cooldown. 80/130/180/230/280 (+60% AP) magic damage to enemy champions and cripples their Attack Speed by 5 to 25%. Allied champions hit are healed 40 and gain 5 to 25% Attack Speed.

E

Arcane Shift

90 mana, cooldown 17 down to 9 seconds. Blinks 475 units and fires a homing bolt for 75/125/175/225/275 (+75% AP).

R

Trueshot Barrage

100 mana, cooldown 120/105/90. Global. 350/500/650 (+70% AP), decaying to 30% damage on later targets.

Three details do all the work here, and two of them are easy to miss.

Mystic Shot applies on hit effects. Not "counts as an attack" in some vague way. It applies them. Sheen, and therefore Trinity Force, proc on it.

Mystic Shot benefits from Life Steal. This is the one nobody expects, and it is the reason the rune page below is correct rather than cute.

Mystic Shot refunds a second of cooldown on every ability when it hits. At rank 5 the base cooldown is 4 seconds, so a connected Q brings the next one back in 3. You are not casting occasionally, you are casting constantly, which is exactly the condition Trinity Force wants.

Why Trinity Force Is the First Item

Sheen proc on an ability that already carries a 120% total Attack Damage ratio and a 1200 range. That alone would justify it.

But look at the rest of the item next to this specific kit. Attack Speed stacks with a passive that already hands you up to 50% for free. Movement speed on a champion whose only defensive tool is a 475 unit blink. The slow on hit, which also fires from Mystic Shot, so you get to slow somebody from 1200 units away. And enough Attack Damage to make the Q ratio matter from the moment you finish it.

Trinity Force is expensive and it is a slow first item, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What you get for that patience is a champion who deals real damage from maximum range at fifteen minutes instead of waiting until three completed items to become relevant.

Ezreal LoL Classic Build: Full Order

Start. Doran's Blade and a Health Potion. You are not sustaining through the lane with base numbers on a 430 Health champion.

  1. Trinity Force. Explained above. Build Sheen early rather than saving for the whole item at once, since the proc is live the moment you own the component.

  2. Berserker's Greaves. Attack Speed on top of a passive that gives you Attack Speed for casting. Everything compounds.

  3. The Bloodthirster. Attack Damage plus Life Steal, and both halves feed Mystic Shot. This is the item where the build stops being fragile.

  4. Infinity Edge. One honest caveat: the crit chance does nothing for Mystic Shot. What Infinity Edge gives you here is a large chunk of Attack Damage, which the Q ratio converts directly, plus the crit damage on your basic attacks. It is still correct, it just is not doing what people assume.

  5. Last Whisper. Mystic Shot deals physical damage, so armor penetration applies to your Q, not only to your autos. Against any team that has bought Armor this is a bigger damage increase than another raw AD item.

  6. Sixth slot, read the game. Phantom Dancer when you are winning and want the Attack Speed and the movement. Guardian Angel or Banshee's Veil when a single spell landing on you is what ends fights.

Skill order: Q, then E, then W.

Q first is not a debate. It is your damage, your on hit proc, your wave clear, and your cooldown engine.

E second, and not for damage. Arcane Shift's magic damage is irrelevant in an Attack Damage build. What ranks buy you is the cooldown dropping from 17 seconds to 9. That is the difference between having an escape sometimes and having an escape whenever you need it, and on a champion with 430 base Health, mobility is a damage stat.

W last, but take one point early. Essence Flux has no Attack Damage scaling at all, so it will never be your damage. It does two useful things anyway: it cripples the enemy carry's Attack Speed by up to 25%, and it can be aimed at yourself. Fire the wave, then Arcane Shift or Flash into its path, and you pick up the heal and the Attack Speed for free. That is a real trick that most Classic Ezreals do not know about.

Runes and Masteries

Marks of Attack Damage. Every point of AD is multiplied by a 120% ratio on your most spammed ability.

Seals of Armor. Standard bot lane insurance.

Glyphs of Magic Resist. You are the squishiest thing on your side of the map.

Quintessences of Life Steal. This is the choice that looks wrong and is not. Because Mystic Shot benefits from Life Steal, these quintessences heal you every time you land a Q, from 1200 units away, starting at level 1. That is not a lane sustain rune, it is a poke sustain rune, and it turns the early trading pattern completely in your favour. Poke, heal, repeat, and the enemy support has no answer that does not involve walking at you.

Masteries: 21 offense, 0 defense, 9 utility. Offense feeds the Attack Damage and cooldown reduction. The nine utility points cover mana regeneration and movement, which matter more than they look on a champion with a 280 base mana pool who wants to cast every four seconds. Skipping defense is the standard marksman risk and your answer to it is Arcane Shift, not armor.

How to Play the Lane

Poke, do not brawl. You have 1200 range on Mystic Shot and 550 on your basic attack. The gap between those two numbers is your entire lane phase. Land Q on the enemy carry every time it is up, take the Life Steal back, and let their health bar drift down without ever committing to a real trade.

Last hit with Q when it is free. Mystic Shot hits the first enemy it touches, so a Q aimed through a low minion at the enemy champion is a last hit and a poke at the same time. Do it whenever the wave allows and mana permits.

Mana is the real constraint. 280 base mana and a 90 mana Arcane Shift means the escape and the poke compete for the same resource. If you spam Q down to nothing and then need to blink, you die. Keep the cost of your escape in reserve.

Rising Spell Force before you commit. Landing an ability first means you enter the trade with bonus Attack Speed already stacked. Q, then autos, in that order, always.

LoL Classic Level Up

Mid Game and Teamfights

Once Trinity Force is finished, your job in a fight is to be the last person the enemy team can reach. Stand at maximum range, hit Q on whatever is closest and largest, and let the on hit slow and the Sheen proc do the damage. Arcane Shift is not an engage tool. It is what you press when someone has already reached you and you were wrong about your positioning.

Trueshot Barrage is a map ability, not a teamfight ability. It is global, it decays to 30% damage after the first target, and it has a 120 second cooldown at rank 1. Firing it into a fight through five minions and a tank is close to wasting it. Firing it across the map to finish a fleeing enemy, or into a contested objective, is what it is for.

What Changed From Live Ezreal

  • Essence Flux is completely different. The Classic version passes through, cripples enemy Attack Speed, and buffs allies. The live version marks a target that Ezreal detonates by attacking it again. There is nothing to detonate here.

  • Mystic Shot's cooldown refund is a flat 1 second on all abilities. Live Ezreal's version refunds a smaller amount and is built around a very different item pattern.

  • Rising Spell Force works the same way but stacks from every enemy hit, so a wide Essence Flux or a well aimed ultimate stacks it fast.

  • Trueshot Barrage deals no reduced damage to minions, decays with each target hit, and has a much longer cooldown than modern players expect.

The habit to unlearn is treating Q as a poke tool you weave between autos. In Classic it is your primary damage source, your on hit trigger, and your cooldown engine at the same time.

Who Should Play This

Play Trinity Force Ezreal if you like winning lanes without ever taking a real trade, and if you are comfortable with a first item that takes a while to come online. The payoff is a marksman who is dangerous from a range nobody else in the mode operates at.

Do not play it if your team needs a carry who can turn a fight around from behind. Ezreal is safe, he is consistent, and he is not the champion who wins a lost teamfight by himself.
