What Does NT Mean in Gaming?
NT stands for nice try, a short piece of chat used after a teammate makes an attempt that fails. It is one of the most common callouts in team shooters, and depending on timing and tone it reads either as genuine encouragement or as a quiet dig.
Quick facts | |
|---|---|
Stands for | Nice try |
Used after | A failed clutch, play or attempt |
Most common in | Valorant, CS2, Overwatch, team shooters |
Tone | Supportive by default, sarcastic in context |

Opposite | NT used after a round nobody tried in |
When NT is genuine
The standard use is after a losing 1v3 where the teammate took two down before falling. The attempt was good, the result was not, and NT acknowledges the first part without dwelling on the second.
It fills a real gap in team games. Without it the alternative is silence after every failed play, which is far worse for a team's mood over a long match.
When NT is a dig
The same two letters go the other way with almost no change in delivery.
NT after someone whiffed an easy shot, NT after a teammate walked into a known angle, NT typed by the player who died first and spent the round spectating. In those cases it means the opposite, and everyone reading it knows exactly which version they received.
This sits in the same family as GGEZ and similar chat, which is why sustained use of it can land in the same reports bucket as general toxicity.
How it differs from similar chat
Term | Said when | Default tone |
|---|---|---|
NT | After a failed attempt | Supportive |
GG | At the end of a match | Neutral to positive |
GGWP | At the end of a match | Positive |
GGEZ | At the end of a match | Insulting |
N1 | After a good play | Positive |
Why short chat exists at all
In a shooter you have a few seconds between rounds and your hands are on movement keys. Two letters is all the budget there is. The entire callout vocabulary exists because typing anything longer costs you the start of the next round.
If you want your communication to actually improve results rather than just fill chat, that is a coachable skill. Our coaching services cover comms alongside mechanics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NT an insult?
It depends on timing. After a genuine attempt it is supportive. After an obvious misplay it is usually sarcastic.
What does NT1 mean?
It is a combination of nice try and nice one, used when a play failed but was still worth doing.
Can you be reported for saying NT?
No, not on its own. Sustained sarcastic use alongside other chat can contribute to a report, but the phrase itself is harmless.
