What is a One Trick in Gaming?

A one trick is a player who plays a single character, champion or agent almost exclusively, often for hundreds or thousands of games. The abbreviation OTP stands for One Trick Pony, and the term covers both a genuine strategy for climbing and a known liability when that pick gets banned or nerfed.

Quick facts

Stands for

OTP, One Trick Pony

Means

Playing one character almost exclusively

Typical threshold

70 percent or more of games on one pick

Main strength

Deep mastery and consistent performance

Main weakness

Bans, nerfs and bad matchups

Common in

LoL, Valorant, Overwatch, fighting games

Why one tricking works

Mastery compounds in ways that a wide champion pool never matches. A one trick knows every matchup from the inside, every cooldown window, every trick the character has that a casual player never learns. They know what their champion does at level 3 against a specific opponent with a specific item, because they have played it two hundred times.

That depth is real and it climbs. Plenty of players have reached Challenger on a champion the community considers mediocre, purely because nobody else knows the pick that well.

Consistency is the second advantage. A one trick plays their best champion every single game, with no off games caused by an unfamiliar pick.

Why it also fails

The failure modes are specific and predictable.

  • Bans. In draft modes, a known one trick gets their pick removed and has nothing behind it.

  • Patch risk. A single nerf can end a climb that took months.

  • Autofill. Being autofilled to another role leaves the pick unavailable entirely.

  • Narrow game knowledge. Deep knowledge of one champion is not the same as understanding the game, and this ceiling shows up hard in higher ranks.

One trick versus main

The two get used interchangeably and should not be. A main is your preferred pick, maybe 30 to 40 percent of games, with real alternatives behind it. A one trick is 70 percent or more with nothing meaningful in reserve.

The sweet spot most coaches recommend is two or three picks in the same role covering different matchups, which keeps most of the mastery advantage without the ban vulnerability.

Building a backup pick

A climb that stalls when your main gets banned is a pool problem, not a skill problem. LoL coaching is the quickest route to a second pick you actually trust, and division boosting covers the rank while you build it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OTP mean one trick pony in gaming?
Yes. In gaming contexts OTP always means one trick pony, not the romance meaning it carries elsewhere online.

Is one tricking good for climbing?
Yes, up to a point. It works well through mid ranks and starts failing where drafts get targeted.

How many games makes someone a one trick?
It depends, but most players use it for anyone above roughly 70 percent of games on a single pick.
