What Is Ping in Gaming?

Ping is the time it takes for data to travel from your computer to the game server and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower is better: under 30 ms feels instant, over 100 ms is noticeable, and anything above 150 ms makes competitive play genuinely harder regardless of your hardware.

What affects your ping?

Distance is the dominant factor and nothing fixes it. Data travels at a physical limit, so a server on another continent will always cost you more than a local one no matter what you pay for internet. Choosing the closest region is the single biggest improvement available to most players.

After that it is routing and connection type. Wi-Fi adds variable delay that Ethernet does not, congested home networks add more, and an ISP with a bad route to the game's data centre can double your ping compared to a neighbour on a different provider. Background downloads, VPNs and streaming all compete for the same connection. Note also that ping is not bandwidth: a gigabit connection with a poor route is worse for gaming than a modest connection with a clean one.

How does ping affect your rank?

In shooters it changes what actually happens. Peeker's advantage grows with latency, so a high ping opponent sees you before you see them, and trades you would have won on equal ping are lost before the shot registers. In MOBAs the cost is subtler: skillshots, ability cancels and item activations all arrive slightly late, which is why high ping players unconsciously play more passively.

The floor this sets on your performance is why it is worth fixing before anything else. Once the connection is clean, the remaining gap is game knowledge, and that is where a Valorant rank boost or a League of Legends division boost moves the account faster than more hours on a bad route ever will.

Ping vs FPS: what is the difference?

Ping measures your connection to the server; FPS measures how many frames your computer draws per second. They feel similar when either one is bad but have nothing in common mechanically. High FPS with terrible ping means a beautifully smooth image of events that already happened, and low FPS with perfect ping means accurate information displayed in a stutter. Fixing one does nothing for the other, which is why upgrading a graphics card never helps a player on a distant server.

FAQ

What is a good ping for gaming? Under 30 ms is excellent and up to about 60 ms is comfortable for competitive play, while consistently above 100 ms puts you at a measurable disadvantage.

Does Wi-Fi increase ping? Yes. Wi-Fi adds both latency and variability, and an Ethernet cable is the cheapest single improvement most players can make.

Can a VPN lower your ping? It depends. A VPN usually raises ping by adding a hop, though it occasionally improves a bad ISP route by bypassing it.
