Champion vs. Champion: The Legacies of League of Legends and Arcane

One debate between fans of the League of Legends game and followers of its Arcane series is their initial impressions of the champions that make them what they are. Certain champions in Arcane seem stronger than their LoL counterparts. This is also the case of visa versa. When comparing champion vs. champion, does Arcane remain in sync with LoL’s roster of champions or is it off the mark?

Let’s find out.

About League of Legends

Riot Games launched League of Legends (LoL) in 2009 as a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game. The immense success of this game spawned several spinoffs, including the animated series Arcane. In 2019, over 100 million unique viewers tuned in to watch the annual League of Legends World Championship. This demonstrated even ten years after LoL was launched it's just as popular as ever.

LoL’s champion roster has over 140 characters to choose from for players. Among those paying attention to competitive and ranked play, there’s a preference for champions who usually perform better than others. On various websites, these champions are marked according to tier levels. According to LoL’s tier system, S+ champions are at the top followed by S-level champions, then A-level champions. These are followed by champs classified at B-level, C-level, and D-level.

As a game, League of Legends commands respect as one of the most popular games of its kind. It’s the largest in esports entertainment calculating its fan base and worldwide viewership.

About Arcane

Arcane was announced as a series joining the legacy of League of Legends as it went into its tenth-anniversary celebration in 2019. The first season was released between November 6 and 20, 2021. The storyline primarily focused on Vi and Jinx. Gamers familiar with LoL recognize these two characters as champions from the game. However, they were also introduced to other champions.

According to Arcane’s storyline, Vi and Jinx live in Zaun, an oppressed community underneath the utopian-style city, of Piltover. The series first shows these two orphaned sisters as kids before losing their guardian and mentor, Vander. Without giving too many spoilers, the first season ends with Vi and Jinx heading down very different paths. This results in a close-knit relationship between the two sisters into a bitter rivalry as adults.

Arcane’s first season made history by winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Oustanding Animated Program in 2022. It was the first streaming series to earn this achievement. While it aired on Netflix, it became the highest-rated series at the time. It ranked first on the network’s ratings chart in fifty-two countries. Critics and publications considered Arcane one of the best video game adaptations ever made.

Arcane’s season two premiered on November 9, 2024. It picked up where the final episode of the first season left off. This time, however, more focus is poured on other infamous LoL champions, namely Caitlyn, Ekko, Heimerdinger, Jayce, and Viktor.

The Differences Between Arcane and League of Legends

Whenever gamers witness their favorite game spin into a movie or television series, their anticipation is met with approval and sometimes it’s not. With a game like League of Legends having so many popular champions, how does Arcane narrow it down to Vi and Jinx as the two main characters?

When factoring in which S+ champions are consistently dominating League of Legends, why Vi? Vi is a D-tier champion while Jinx typically outclasses her as B-tier. There’s also Caitlyn, introduced in the first season and joined the ranks as a main character. Going into the second season, her role has become more prominent. This is to the delight of hardcore LoL fans who recognize her as an S+ level.

Despite the differences, Arcane’s popularity as a series cemented the legacy of League of Legends as more than just a globally favored video game. Fans who don’t know the game at all view Arcane as an entertaining series with incredibly dynamic characters. This resulted in Arcane opening a floodgate of new LoL gamers who wanted to taste the action.

What the Future Holds

Riot Games routinely updates its games, especially League of Legends. This includes buffs, nerfs, and new policies. These changes often affect LoL’s champions as a benefit or a crutch. As Arcane continues as a series, what does this mean for characters like Vi and Jinx? How about the others?

Arcane was introduced as a series with its own universe by using some of LoL’s favorite champions. In response, LoL has grown as a game with new twists to keep things interesting. It’s a successful formula working wonders as millions tune in to watch Arcane and play LoL.
