Set 5 is finally here! With all-new champions and traits, we got introduced as well with another new mechanic, the Shadow items!

Shadow items are part of the new set mechanic. They are evil counterparts of the normal items; they usually offer stronger or different effects than the normal counterparts but at a cost.

Example:

   Dark Shroud of Stillness

When combat begins, shoots a beam straight ahead of and behind them that delays affected enemies’ and allies’ first spell cast, increasing their max Mana by 65% until they cast.

This means you need to be really careful not to use it against your own team, and position the Shroud user away from your units!

Some of the Shadow Items are better than others, so you’ll need to be very selective in how you use them. Sometimes, the Shadow option isn’t the best choice!

Here is the list of my personal favorite Shadow items:

Caustic Quicksilver

For the the small cost of losing 20% maximum health, the wearer gains crowd control immunity for the entire round.

So pretty much you are immune to crowd control during the whole fight, works really well with Mordekaiser and Jax!

Hand of Vengeance
The wearer gets both the HoJ bonuses (extra 40 AD/AP and healing for 40% of damage built), but they lose both bonuses after their first takedown. The user regains both bonuses again after the second takedown, and so on.

The user gets these bonuses at the start of the round, meaning it’s guaranteed they will get that extra up-front damage and healing. It’s a good item for Karma or Vel'Koz.

Guinsoo’s Evil Rageblade
Attacks grant +8% bonus Attack Speed for the rest of combat, but the wearer is dealt 2% of their maximum Health each attack. The bonus Attack Speed can stack any number of times.

You sacrifice health for attack speed works well when paired with healing items, best user Aphelios!

  Frozen Dark Heart
Reduces the Attack Speed of all enemies within 2 hexes by 50%. Each Frozen Heart a champion carries beyond the first increases the radius of this effect. The Attack Speed of allies (except the wearer) within 1 hex is reduced by 50%.

This item is great on Diana, Viego since they can apply it to the backline, with correct positioning it’s super strong, just make sure you move the user 1 hex away from your own units!

Force of Darkness
Wearer’s team gains +2 maximum team size but the player’s Little Legends takes 100% extra damage.

You get 2 extra units on your board which is insane!

The only tricky part is you lose the double amount of health points for every loss. If your board is weak this item will kill you fast, but if you got a strong board, it will make you even stronger!

  Mor-evil-lonomicon
When the holder deals magic damage with their spell, the spell deals 50% less damage but they burn the target, dealing 100% of the target’s maximum Health as true damage over 25 seconds, and reducing healing by 50% for the duration of the burn.

Great item on Morgana, Kennen, or Volibear, you want to use this item on front line units that have AOE abilities. Don’t use it on your main AP carry units since it reduces half of their damage.

Chalice of Malice
When combat begins, all allies within 1 hex in the same row gain 50 Spell Power for the rest of combat. The wearer loses 20 Spell Power.

You want to use this on support units in AP comps to buff your main carry with extra ability. Example: Soraka in Dawnbringers.

Poisoned Gauntlet
The holder’s spells can inflict critical hits. Gain 40% Critical Strike Damage and 25% Critical Strike Chance, but when the wearer casts they lose 20% of the maximum Health.

This item is used in almost every AP comp, you get an extra 25% Critical Strike Chance but for every cast, you lose health so make sure to pair it with Gunblade for healing or you may kill your carry!
