EB24 about Teamfight Tactics #4 - Community thoughts on why TFT is so special

As we've seen in the previous blog post, we talked about our community's opinion related to the meta and balance of TFT. We've also seen that most people also also neutral or even happy with the patches and the game itself but why?

In this blog post, we will focus on topics on why TFT is special and has gained so many fans throughout time. As you know, TFT has been released on PBE on June 19 and on June 29, it was released live on patch 9.13.

We're now on patch 9.22 and TFT Set 2 is already live! So much has changed since the beginning and we believe that now, TFT will be getting bigger and bigger. The reasons why it is so special and will only become more popular are:

• Design and game-style

TFT is very unique in its game-style and design. We know that TFT is inspired by Auto Chess but the fact that it includes champions from League itself, makes it a whole new game. Even if you know what the champion does on League, things change for that champion once he is inside the TFT arena.

Even a very popular streamer called scarra that was once a pro-player of League said:

“I ended up playing Dota Auto Chess for four months in a row before TFTcame out and before I even knew about TFT, so it was like, well, I love the game mode, and somehow I’m back with Riot in the most awkward, circular way possible. Honestly, I really love TFTright now, but maybe in a couple of months, it gets stale,”

• Strategy

League and TFT are both strategic games but TFT has a different way to create strategy. Not only, you only depend on yourself to make the plays, it can also be very mind tricks, like if you were playing chess. Because each place has its own meaning and a badly positioned champion, maybe lead to a lost round.

• Time

Riot wanted League games to be faster, around 25 to 30 minutes per game. TFT can be faster than that some times which makes it way more practical and easy to enroll if you are short in time but really wanted to play a match. TFT has small-timers between rounds which makes the game be faster and more rewarding if you only have a few minutes left before leaving.

• Simplicity and Skill-Cap

We talked about the design and game-style but something that also makes TFT so special is the fact that it is such a simple game. It is very intuitive of what you need to do – level up your champions, build similar traits comps, place them on the board and you're ready to go. But something that no one tells you when playing TFT is that is has a huge Skill-Cap, just like League! Some strategies and mind tricking tricks can twist the 6th place into a victory in a couple of rounds later. The Skill-Cap of TFT is very interesting because of the fact that the champions' attack on their own, makes the position and the combinations, something very important to control and pay attention because that might win you the game!

A very popular Hearthstone player, named Hafu that got in first place when TFT got out on PBE and was considered the best player of TFT also had an opinion on the skill-cap and randomness of the game saying:
“There’s an element of RNG, but there’s a reason why people can consistently do really well. You’re gonna have unfortunate rolls sometimes but your opponents are also going to have unfortunate rolls. It’s just a very toxic mentality to always think about all these elements that you can’t control.”

• Funny against Friends

Unlike League, TFT can be a fun game to play against your friends since you will play all against each other! Winning against a friend by a small amount of damage is always something you would laugh about it. And there's always the opportunity that you can get to play with one of our boosters and also have a lot of fun! These are the points that we've collected after talking with our community, boosters, and customers as well! We see that TFT has a lot of potentials to grow and we know that Riot will make sure to make it grow as much as possible!
