What is LP in League of Legends?
Everyone learns the basic rule in their first week: 100 LP moves you up a division. What nobody explains is why two players in the same lobby with the same result walk away with completely different amounts.
LP stands for League Points, the ranked currency you gain for wins and lose for defeats, with 100 needed to advance a division.
Why your LP gains differ from everyone else's
Your payout is set by MMR, the hidden rating Riot compares against the lobby average. Sit above it and you gain more than you lose. Sit below it and the maths quietly works against you every single game.
The system is trying to move you toward where it thinks you belong. If it agrees with your badge, gains and losses balance out around 20 to 25. If it disagrees, the imbalance is the correction in progress.
What drains LP outside of losing
Cause | Cost | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
Dodging champion select | Direct LP penalty, scaling with repeats | All ranks |
LP removed on a timer while inactive | Diamond and above | |
Low priority queue | No LP loss, but forced wait time | Repeat AFK offenders |
Losing at 0 LP | Demotion to the division below | All ranks, with a short grace window |
The grace window matters. Right after a promotion you get a few games of protection, so a single loss at 0 LP will not immediately undo the rank you just earned.
LP gains change without you noticing
Your rate is not fixed for the split. As your rating drifts, so does your payout, and it moves silently. A strong week can visibly improve gains without you climbing a single division. A rough patch does the reverse, and most players only spot it weeks later when the climb has already stalled.
Watching that split is the fastest health check on your account. If wins pay noticeably less than losses cost, the problem is under the hood and grinding another hundred games will not fix it.
Riot also added an LP protection and bonus system called Aegis of Valor in 2026, which softens some of the volatility, though the core relationship between rating and payout is unchanged.
If the LP is going out faster than it comes in, division boosting handles the full climb, and pay per game boosting lets you buy a fixed number of games instead of committing to a whole rank.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much LP do you need to rank up?
100 LP moves you into the next division, and from the top division of a tier into the tier above.
Why do I gain 14 LP and my duo gains 27?
Your MMR is lower than theirs relative to the same rank. Same badge, different hidden rating.
Can you lose LP without playing a game?
Yes, through decay, but only from Diamond upwards.
