Deadlock in 2026: Player Records, the City Never Sleeps Update and How to Get an Invite

Deadlock hit an all-time peak of 303,347 concurrent Steam players on October 16, 2026, while still being an invite-only playtest with no release date. The surge came with City Never Sleeps, the September 29 update that has been rolling out six new heroes on a staggered schedule, and it made Valve's MOBA-shooter the company's third-biggest game ever by peak players, behind only Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2.

What Deadlock Is

Deadlock is Valve's hybrid of a MOBA and a hero shooter: two teams of six push lanes with creep waves, farm souls, buy items and take towers, except every fight is a third-person shooter with movement tech instead of a top-down click fest. Since a February 2025 update the map runs three lanes, down from the original four.

If Dota 2 and a fast shooter had a child and Valve raised it, this is it, and that is not an analogy the community invented. It is the pitch.

The Comeback Story

Deadlock has already lived a whole life cycle before even releasing:

  • September 2024: the secret playtest exploded to a 171,490 peak purely through word of mouth.

  • April 2025: the hype cooled hard, with averages reported around 9,000 players, a roughly 90% fall.

  • Summer 2026: a loyal base held around 45,000 to 48,000 concurrent on average.

  • September 29, 2026: City Never Sleeps landed, and the peak jumped to 228,086 the same day.

  • October 9: a 262,145 peak passed Team Fortress 2's reported all-time record.

  • October 16: the current record, 303,347, set the day the hero Violet released.

The lesson from that curve: declaring an unreleased Valve game dead is a bad habit. Valve let the test shrink, kept shipping, and the players came back triple.

What City Never Sleeps Added

The update's headline was six new heroes released one at a time, twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm PT, in the order players voted for: Rat King (October 2), Baba (October 6), Solomon (October 9), Deadman Danny (October 13), Violet (October 16) and Nurse Harrow (October 20). Harrow was the last one, bringing the roster to 44 heroes. Each release produced a visible player spike, which is exactly why Valve staggers them.

Our guide to all six new heroes covers each one, with full builds for Rat King, the strongest hero in the game right now, and the other five. The rest of the roster is ranked in our late October tier list.

Does Deadlock Have Ranked?

Yes. The July 30, 2026 matchmaking update is reported to have split queues into Standard and Ranked, giving the playtest a proper competitive ladder. That is also why smurfing and rank anxiety discussions have arrived months before the game itself has: the ladder is live, visible and very sweaty at the top.

Our ranks guide lists all 11 ranks and the ranked unlock guide explains the 60-win gate. If you are grinding it, Deadlock rank boosting gets you to your target bracket, and win boosting adds wins near a rank boundary, placement matches and ranked unlock handle the entry grind, and Deadlock Fast Games put a verified strong teammate in your lobby, which in a 6v6 game with this much macro is worth more than in most shooters.

How to Get a Deadlock Invite

Deadlock is free, but you cannot just install it. Access comes through invites:

  1. Know someone who plays. Current players can send invites to Steam friends from inside the game. This is the main route, and with monthly peaks this high, the odds someone on your friends list has access are better than ever.

  2. Ask in communities. The official Discord and Deadlock subreddits regularly have players offering invites. Never pay a stranger for a bare invite: they are given away free in bulk.

  3. A ready account. Some players skip the hunt by buying an account that already has access and progress. The Deadlock accounts marketplace lists them with payment held until delivery. If you go that route, change the password and email immediately and read how to buy first.

Is Deadlock Releasing Soon?

No date has been announced, and as of late October there is no purchase version and no open access. Valve being Valve, the game will release when it releases. The practical read of 2026: the player curve and the content pace both point to a project Valve is investing in heavily, not a side experiment.

Should You Play It Now?

If you like MOBAs or hero shooters, yes, and the earlier the better: item knowledge and map habits compound, and the ladder is still young enough that climbing is realistic. The flip side of an invite-only playtest is constant change, so expect reworks to invalidate builds regularly. That churn is also why our tier list is dated and refreshed with patches.
