Deadlock Placement Matches: How Calibration Works and Why Oracle VI Is the Cap

Deadlock's calibration is eight placement matches, all played solo, during which you carry the uncalibrated Obscurus badge, and the highest rank they can give you is Oracle VI, even if you were Phantom or Eternus before. Your previous performance still seeds who you are matched against, so placements are not played against beginners, but the top three ranks can only be reached by climbing after calibration.

Why the Cap Exists

The Oracle VI ceiling does one thing: it makes Phantom, Ascendant and Eternus earned ranks, never placed ones. A returning top player has to prove the level again across real games, which keeps the top of the ladder clean in Season 1 and makes those badges mean something. The side effect is that the Oracle bracket is a melting pot early in a season, with genuine Oracles sharing lobbies with recalibrating monsters passing through on their way up.

How to Approach Your Eight Games

Calibration rewards consistency across eight games, not one highlight reel, so the plan is boring on purpose:

  1. Play your three best heroes only. Placements are the wrong moment to experiment, and your ranked-eligible pool already proves 15 wins on each.

  2. Pick comfort over counters. A 70% comfort pick beats a 50% "correct" pick when every game carries this much weight.

  3. Protect your mental. Eight games is a short sample. Two bad games are a quarter of your calibration, so stop for the day after consecutive losses instead of donating a third.

  4. Play for wins, not stats. The matchmaker watches performance, but a win is the one signal that never reads badly.

  5. Spread them out. Nothing forces all eight in one sitting, and fresh placements beat tilted placements.

If You Want Them Played Right

Placements set your starting point for the whole season, and starting two subranks higher saves dozens of games of climbing later. Deadlock placement matches gets your eight calibration games played by a professional at the highest standard the cap allows, and if you have not cleared the 60-win gate yet, ranked unlock handles that first. From there, rank boosting continues past Oracle VI, where the real climb starts.

How the whole ladder fits together is in our ranks guide, and the cost of each rank in games is in how to rank up fast.

FAQ

How many placement matches does Deadlock have? Eight, and all of them must be played solo.

What is the highest rank you can get from Deadlock placements? Oracle VI. Phantom, Ascendant and Eternus can only be reached by climbing afterwards.

Do placements start from zero for former high-rank players? No. Previous performance seeds your calibration lobbies, but your resulting rank is still capped at Oracle VI.

What is Obscurus? The badge shown while you are uncalibrated, before your eight placements are complete.
