How to Play SPAM: Beginner's Guide to the Steam Card Battler Everyone Is Trying
SPAM is a free-to-play PvP card battler that launched on Steam on October 7, 2026: each player brings exactly four cards, all four are on the board from turn one, abilities fire on cooldowns instead of being drawn, and you win by destroying all four enemy cards. It reached number one on Steam's trending free chart within a day and has a Very Positive rating, and the whole game is built around three systems: elements, Spamtons and the Tox Shop.

The Basics
Four cards, no hand. There is no deck to draw from. Every card you own in a match is visible from the start.
Cooldowns instead of mana. Each ability has a cooldown in turns. When it is ready, it fires. Your decisions are about the shop and the order things resolve, not about what to play.
Win condition. Destroy all four enemy cards.
Elements
Every card belongs to one of seven elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Nature, Shadow, Light and Ether, with Ether reserved for a single card. Abilities generate element points, and every point adds 10% damage to that element's abilities for the rest of the match. Decks that stack one or two elements scale the hardest, which is why most strong lists are built around an "engine" card that produces points fast.
Spamtons: The In-Match Economy
Spamtons are the currency you spend during a match. Each turn you earn the turn number plus every card's Spamton value, and you get 50 Spamtons back when one of your own cards dies, which is the game's built-in comeback mechanic.
The Tox Shop
Every other turn the Tox Shop opens with three offers. You can buy one Tox, reroll for 10 Spamtons, or skip for 10 Spamtons, and each player gets one family ban. Tox are passives that change what a card does for the rest of the match. There are 41 Tox families, most with common, rare, epic and legendary versions.
Your Luck rises by one every turn and decides the rarity of what you are offered. Early you see commons; by Luck 20 most offers are epic or legendary. Our Tox Shop and ranked guide has the exact odds.
Talents
Every card has three talents, and only one is active per match. In casual play you set it beforehand. In ranked you pick it in a 30 second draft before the match, after seeing your opponent's cards.
Getting Cards
Cards come from orbs, which you open with Crystals earned by playing or with Spam, the premium currency. Over half the card pool, 66 of 127, is common, and several commons are among the strongest cards in the game, so new accounts can build competitive decks quickly. Our best decks guide has three commons-only lists.
Ranked
Ranked unlocks after three casual matches and runs from Bronze through Silver, Gold, Crystal and Celeste to Legend, with 15 stars per rank.
Your First Hour
Play the three casual matches to unlock ranked.
Build one of the commons-only starter decks.
Buy Berserk in the Tox Shop when it appears, because it raises the damage and healing of all four cards.
Watch what your opponent's cards do for two matches before you reroll aggressively.
SPAM is Steam only. If you want to top up a Steam wallet for the premium pass or Spam currency without a card on your account, Steam gift cards are listed on EB24 with the region named on every offer.
