Wukong LoL Classic Build: The Only Build You Need

Wukong LoL Classic Build: The Only Build You Need
Wukong LoL Classic Build: The Only Build You Need

Wukong is the champion people underrate in League Classic because he looks simple. Four buttons, no resource management drama, a clone that everybody has seen before. Then you read that Crushing Blow strips 30% of a target's Armor and that Cyclone deals up to 480% of your Attack Damage over four seconds, and the picture changes.

This is the mid lane version: max E, build a Tiamat first, and turn every fight into an Armor problem the enemy cannot solve. Mid is where this build makes the most sense, because a shoved wave in the middle of the map is two roams instead of one, and Wukong shoves faster than almost anything he lanes against.

TL;DR: max E, then Q, then W, with R at 6, 11, and 16. Tiamat first, then The Black Cleaver and boots, then finish Ravenous Hydra. After that Youmuu's Ghostblade, Maw of Malmortius, and Last Whisper or The Bloodthirster to close. Run armor penetration marks, health seals, magic resist glyphs, and Attack Damage quintessences.

And one warning before anything else: you cannot use the Hydra active while Cyclone is spinning. More on that below, because it changes how you sequence your entire fight.

The Kit

Key

Ability

Numbers that matter

P

Stone Skin

4/6/8 bonus Armor and Magic Resist per nearby visible enemy champion, based on level, at 1400 radius. Decoys count as champions.

Q

Crushing Blow

40 mana flat, cooldown 9 down to 5. Next attack within 5 seconds gains 125 bonus range, deals 30/60/90/120/150 (+110% AD), and reduces the target's Armor by 30% for 3 seconds. Resets the attack timer.

W

Decoy

50 to 70 mana, cooldown 18 down to 10. Pushed 100 units away, 1.5 seconds of invisibility, and the decoy explodes for 70/115/160/205/250 (+60% AP).

E

Nimbus Strike

45 to 65 mana, 8 second cooldown at all ranks, 625 range. Dashes to a target and sends clones at up to two more enemies for 60/105/150/195/240 (+80% bonus AD) each, then grants 30/35/40/45/50% Attack Speed for 4 seconds.

R

Cyclone

100 mana, cooldown 120/105/90. Spins up to 4 seconds, ramping to 40% bonus movement speed, knocking up enemies on first contact, dealing 10/55/100 (+60% AD) every half second. Total: 80/440/800 (+480% AD).

Three things carry this build, and two of them are easy to skim past.

Stone Skin scales with how many people are near you. Standing in a five person teamfight at level 18 means eight Armor and eight Magic Resist per enemy in a 1400 radius. That is a free defensive item for walking into a fight, and it is the reason Wukong can build damage without immediately dying.

Crushing Blow strips 30% of the target's Armor, not a flat number. Percentage shred gets better the more Armor they buy. Against a tank who has invested in resistances, your Q is doing more work than any raw damage item in your inventory.

Nimbus Strike has a flat 8 second cooldown at every rank. Ranks do not make it more available, they make it hit harder and grant more Attack Speed. That matters for how you think about maxing it.

Why Max E First

E is your damage, your gap closer, your wave clear, and your Attack Speed steroid.

The 80% bonus Attack Damage ratio is per target, and it hits up to three enemies. In a lane that means the wave takes real damage while you close on the champion. In a skirmish it means you arrive with 50% bonus Attack Speed already running, which converts directly into more auto attacks, faster Black Cleaver stacking, and faster Q resets.

There is also a defensive detail almost nobody uses: the clones from Nimbus Strike can block non targeted attacks and abilities for a quarter second after they hit. It is small, but against a skillshot heavy lane it is real.

Q second for the damage and the Armor shred, and because the cooldown drops from 9 seconds to 5. W last, though take one point early, because 1.5 seconds of invisibility plus a decoy is an escape long before the explosion damage matters. Note that the W damage scales with Ability Power, which you are not building, so extra ranks are buying you cooldown and nothing else.

The Cyclone and Hydra Problem

This is the part that will cost you kills if you do not know it, so I am giving it its own section.

While Cyclone is active, you cannot use the Tiamat, Ravenous Hydra, or Titanic Hydra active. Other item actives and summoner spells still work. The Hydra crescent specifically does not.

You are building both a Tiamat and a Ravenous Hydra in this guide, so the sequencing matters:

Use the Hydra active before you press R, not during. The correct order in a fight is Nimbus Strike in, Crushing Blow, Hydra active, then Cyclone. If you open with the ultimate, you have locked out one of your damage buttons for up to four seconds.

Also worth knowing: Cyclone stops you basic attacking and casting abilities entirely, and you can reactivate it after 1 second to cancel early. That cancel is a real tool. Knock everybody up, take the first ticks, then cut it short and go back to Crushing Blow and auto attacks rather than spinning uselessly while your target walks out.

Wukong LoL Classic Build

Start. Doran's Blade and a Health Potion. Cloth Armor and potions into a heavy Attack Damage lane.

1. Tiamat. First purchase and it is doing more than wave clear. Attack Damage, health regeneration, and splash on every attack, which means your farm is easy and your shove is fast enough to roam or reset. Wukong wants to be pushing the lane, because a shoved wave is what lets him leave for a fight.

2. The Black Cleaver. This is the item the build is really about. It shreds Armor per hit and stacks, and Crushing Blow already removes 30% of what they have. Those two effects layer, and against any bruiser or tank the result is that your team's physical damage lands on somebody with almost no Armor left. The Health and cooldown reduction are exactly what a top laner wants on top of that.

3. Boots. Ninja Tabi into an Attack Damage lane, Mercury's Treads when the enemy has the crowd control to stop Cyclone before it ticks. Cyclone is your biggest damage window and losing it to a stun is the most common way this build fails.

4. Ravenous Hydra. Finish what the Tiamat started. Attack Damage, Life Steal that applies to the splash, and the active. Just remember the Cyclone restriction above.

5. Youmuu's Ghostblade. Attack Damage, cooldown reduction, armor penetration, and an active that gives movement speed and Attack Speed. It stacks with what Nimbus Strike is already handing you, and the armor penetration compounds with two separate sources of Armor shred you already own.

6. Maw of Malmortius. Attack Damage, Magic Resist, and a shield that triggers when magic damage would kill you. In mid lane you are standing across from an Ability Power champion almost every game, and Maw is the item that lets a melee bruiser walk at a mage and survive the burst that was supposed to stop him. The Attack Damage also scales up as your health drops, which fits a champion who spends four seconds spinning in the middle of a fight.

Final slot: Last Whisper or The Bloodthirster. Take Last Whisper when the enemy has bought Armor, because it layers on top of Crushing Blow's percentage shred, Black Cleaver's stacks, and Youmuu's penetration, and at that point they effectively have none left. Take The Bloodthirster when you are already winning and want the Attack Damage and Life Steal instead.

Runes and Masteries

Marks of Armor Penetration. Flat penetration rather than Attack Damage, and the reason is the rest of the build. You already own Crushing Blow's 30% shred, Black Cleaver's stacking shred, and Youmuu's penetration. Penetration compounds with itself in a way that raw Attack Damage does not, and against the low base Armor of most mid laners it means your early trades land almost unresisted.

Seals of Health, mixed flat and scaling. A split between flat Health and Health that scales to level 18 covers both problems at once. The flat portion keeps you alive through the early levels where Stone Skin has nothing to work with, and the scaling portion pays off late, when you are the one standing in the middle of a fight for four seconds. Armor seals are the conventional pick, but Health is the better fit here because Stone Skin already supplies resistances once enemies are close.

Glyphs of Magic Resist. Mid lane means an Ability Power opponent most games, and Stone Skin does nothing against poke from outside its radius.

Quintessences of Attack Damage. Everything in the kit scales with it, including a 110% ratio on Crushing Blow and a 480% total on your ultimate. Flat Attack Damage also makes your last hitting comfortable, which matters more in mid than in a side lane.

Masteries: 21 offense, 9 defense. Offense for the Attack Damage, armor penetration, and cooldown reduction. The nine defensive points cover the early levels before Stone Skin has enough targets to matter.

Laning Phase

Levels 1 to 5 are about the wave. You are melee with 175 range and no ultimate, standing across from someone who is almost certainly ranged. Farm, take short trades when Crushing Blow is up, and let Tiamat come online. This is the hardest part of the build and it is survivable rather than winnable against most mid laners.

The trade pattern is Q, auto, leave. Crushing Blow resets your attack timer and gains 125 bonus range, so the sequence is walk to the edge of their range, press Q, land the empowered attack plus a normal one, and step back out. The Armor shred lasts 3 seconds, so anything else you land in that window hits harder too.

Do not open trades with E in lane. Nimbus Strike draws minion aggro and commits you into their wave. Save it for when you need to close a gap on a champion who is already low, or for an escape route through a minion.

Decoy is your gank insurance. The 1.5 second invisibility breaks target locks, and the decoy will often eat the jungler's crowd control. Do not spend it clearing the wave.

Level 6 changes the lane. Cyclone knocks up on first contact, so any opponent who steps too far forward can be caught, held, and killed. Combined with Ignite, that is a solo kill on most mid laners who respect you too little.

Then start roaming, because that is why you are here. Tiamat clears the wave in a couple of attacks, and from mid you are a short walk from either side lane and from the enemy jungle. A Wukong who shoves and leaves is worth far more than one who farms fifty extra creeps. Nimbus Strike gives you a gap closer to open the gank with, Cyclone gives you the knockup to finish it, and Decoy gets you out if the counter gank arrives.

Teamfights

You are not the initiator unless nobody else is. Cyclone knocking up an entire group is genuine engage, but it is also your only real damage window and it makes you untouchable to your own inputs for the duration.

The sequence is: Nimbus Strike onto the closest valuable target, Crushing Blow, Hydra active, Cyclone. Then cancel the spin when the knockup value is spent and go back to attacking.

Stone Skin means you want to be in the middle. Every enemy champion within 1400 units is giving you resistances. Backing away from a fight is actively removing your own tankiness.

Your job on the shred is bigger than your damage. Between Crushing Blow's 30%, Black Cleaver's stacking shred, and Youmuu's penetration, whoever you touch stops having Armor. Touch the person your Attack Damage carry is trying to kill.

What Beats You

Hard crowd control during Cyclone. Losing the ultimate to a stun turns your biggest fight window into a 90 second wait.

Ranged poke in lane. 175 range and a dash that draws minion aggro is a rough combination against anyone who can chip you safely.

Percentage health damage. Stone Skin gives resistances, not Health, so anything that ignores Armor and Magic Resist goes straight through your defensive layer.

What Changed From Modern Wukong

  • Stone Skin scales with the number of nearby enemy champions. Modern Wukong's passive is a stacking Armor and health regeneration effect that works very differently.

  • Decoy grants 1.5 seconds of invisibility and leaves a clone that explodes for magic damage. Modern Warrior Trickster is a dash plus a decoy with different rules.

  • Nimbus Strike hits up to three targets and grants Attack Speed. Familiar, but the Attack Speed component is a bigger part of this build than modern players treat it as.

  • Cyclone is a self contained spin with no clones. Modern Cyclone spawns duplicates, which is the single most visually obvious difference.

The habit to unlearn is expecting the ultimate to create clones. Here it is a four second commitment where you cannot attack, cannot cast, and cannot use your Hydra.

Who Should Play This

Play Wukong if you like top laners who farm safely, scale into a real teamfight ultimate, and contribute something measurable beyond their own damage. The Armor shred is a genuine team wide buff that no scoreboard will ever credit you for.

Do not pick him if your team needs a front line that can hold a fight for ten seconds, or if you want a lane bully who wins level 1. He is the champion who is fine at minute five and terrifying at minute twenty five.
