What is Autofill in League of Legends?

Autofill is the system that assigns you a role you did not select, so queues keep moving when too many players want the same position.
You queue mid and secondary top. Champion select loads and the client has put you on support, a role you last played in 2022. Twenty minutes later you are the reason the game went badly and everyone in chat knows it.

Why it exists at all

Roles are not picked evenly. Mid and jungle are hugely oversubscribed while support sits half empty in most regions. Without autofill, mid lane queue times would run into double digit minutes at peak hours.

The system fills the gap with whoever it can. Historically that meant one team could get a filled player while the other got five players on their mains, which is the part the community actually complained about.

What changed in 2026

Riot rebuilt autofill for the 2026 season around parity rather than pure speed. The matchmaker now tries to place autofilled players against other autofilled players in the same role, or at minimum keep the count balanced across both teams.

The practical result is that a filled support now more often faces another filled support, rather than a one trick who has played the role for three years. It does not remove autofill, and it was never going to, but it removes most of the unfairness people were actually angry about.

Riot also added Aegis of Valor in the same overhaul, an LP protection and bonus system aimed at softening the games where the lobby was stacked against you.

Reducing how often it happens to you

  • Pick an unpopular secondary. Selecting support or top as your second role dramatically lowers your fill rate, because those are the queues that need bodies.

  • Avoid peak hours if you can. Fill rates rise sharply when the mid and jungle queues are longest.

  • Fill on purpose. Choosing fill gives you an instant queue and, in many regions, a champion select priority bonus afterwards.

The uncomfortable truth is that a wide champion pool is the only permanent solution. Players who can play two roles competently barely notice autofill exists.

If a filled game or two has already cost you a promotion, win boosting buys back the LP, and LoL coaching is the fastest way to build a second role you are not embarrassed to be given.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you turn off autofill in League of Legends?
No. You can only reduce your chances by picking an unpopular secondary role or selecting fill deliberately.

Does autofill affect your MMR?
Not directly, but the results of those games do, exactly like any other ranked match.

How often does autofill happen?
It depends on region, rank and time of day. Players with mid or jungle as both roles see it far more than anyone else.
