What Is Challenger in League of Legends?

Challenger is the highest rank in League of Legends, sitting above Grandmaster and reserved for a fixed number of the highest LP players on each server. It is not a threshold you cross and keep: the spots are capped, the ladder is recalculated constantly, and you hold Challenger only while your LP stays above the player ranked last inside the cut.

How do you reach Challenger in League of Legends?

You reach Challenger by having more LP than everyone outside the cut on your server. Once you pass Master, LP stops resetting between divisions and becomes a single running total, so the apex tiers work as one leaderboard split by position rather than as tiers you promote into.

Two mechanics make it harder to hold than to reach. LP gains shrink at the top because your MMR is already near the ceiling, so wins pay less while losses cost full value. And decay is aggressive: Challenger accounts bank only a handful of games and then lose LP every day they sit idle, which is why the ladder shuffles overnight. Every new split resets the ladder and everyone climbs back through Master and Grandmaster before the cut is recalculated.

How does Challenger affect your account and rewards?

Challenger changes what the account is worth. It unlocks the exclusive summoner icon and border, the Challenger loading screen frame, and eligibility for tournaments and amateur scouting, and it is the only rank most people can recognise on sight. The ranked rewards at the end of a season scale with it too.

Getting there is a time problem more than a skill problem, because the last few hundred LP need a sustained high win rate at a point where each win pays little. That is the exact stretch Master to Challenger boosting exists for, handled by players already on the apex ladder, while accounts further down close the earlier distance with a standard division boost.

Challenger vs Grandmaster: what is the difference?

Both tiers pull from the same LP pool, and the only difference is where you sit on the leaderboard. Grandmaster covers the block of players below the Challenger cut, Challenger covers the top slots on the server. Because the boundary is a position rather than an LP number, the same total can be Grandmaster on one day and Challenger on another, and dropping out of Challenger does not mean losing games, only that other players passed you.

FAQ

Can you lose Challenger without losing a game? Yes. The cut is relative, so other players climbing past you, or your own decay while you are inactive, drops you into Grandmaster with no loss on your record.

Does Challenger exist in Flex queue? Yes. Flex has its own apex ladder with its own cut, and it is considerably easier to reach there than in Solo/Duo because the population is much smaller.

Is Challenger the same size on every server? No. The number of slots scales with server population, so Korea, EUW and NA have the largest ladders while smaller regions have far fewer spots and a lower LP requirement.
