What is MMR in League of Legends?
Riot has never put MMR in the client. There is no tab, no number, no tooltip. Yet it is the single value that decides who you queue with, how much LP each win is worth, and whether your climb feels smooth or stuck.
MMR stands for Matchmaking Rating, the live internal score Riot updates after every ranked game you finish.
What moves your MMR
Only results move it. Not your KDA, not your damage share, not your champion pool, not how many pings your jungler ignored. Win and it goes up, lose and it goes down.
What changes is the size of the movement. The system carries an expectation into every game based on the two teams' ratings. Beat a lobby you were predicted to lose and the correction is large, because the model got you wrong. Beat one you were favoured in and it barely registers.
This is why win streaks feel like they snowball. Three or four wins in a row is a strong signal that the estimate was too low, so the system corrects fast.
Reading your own MMR without a tracker
Your LP split is the cheapest diagnostic available.
LP per win | LP per loss | What it means |
|---|---|---|
20 to 25 | 20 to 25 | Rating and rank are aligned. Normal state. |
12 to 16 | 22 or more | Rating sits below your badge. Every win pays half price. |
28 or more | 15 or less | Rating is above your rank. The system is pushing you up. |
The middle row is where climbs die. You can hold a positive win rate for two hundred games in that state and finish the split exactly where you started, which is the mechanical reality behind what most players call elo hell.
Each queue keeps its own number
Solo/Duo, Flex and normals all track separately and never share data. A Master rating in Solo/Duo does nothing for your Flex placements. Riot did tighten the relationship between Flex and Solo/Duo rank in 2026 so the two ladders sit closer together, but the underlying ratings remain distinct.
Checking and repairing it
Our free LoL MMR checker pulls an estimate for your account in seconds and tells you whether you are above or below your rank.
If it comes back low, more games is the wrong answer. A neutral grind at 50 percent moves the number almost not at all. Consecutive wins move it hard, which is exactly what win boosting delivers, while division boosting skips the repair entirely and takes you to the rank you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does dodging lower your MMR?
No. Dodging costs LP and queue time, but no game was played so the rating is untouched.
Do normal games affect ranked MMR?
No. Normals run on a separate rating with no crossover.
Does MMR reset each season?
It gets compressed toward the middle, not wiped. Your old rating still shapes your placement lobbies.
