What Is a Comp in TFT?

Comp is short for composition and means the specific set of units, traits and items you build in a Teamfight Tactics game. A comp is defined by its carry, the traits it activates and the level it wants to reach, and choosing one that nobody else in the lobby is building matters as much as playing it well.

How do comps work in TFT?

A comp is a target board rather than a starting point. You begin with whatever the early shop offers, then steer towards a final eight or nine unit board built around one carry holding three items, with traits filling the rest of the slots.

Comps come in shapes rather than fixed lists. Reroll comps stay at a low level and hunt three star cheap units. Fast eight comps rush levels for expensive carries. Vertical trait comps stack one trait as high as it goes. The skill is not memorising a list from a tier site but reading what the lobby is doing, because two players forcing the same comp both finish worse than either would alone. Contested units simply do not appear, which is the same pool logic that makes a hyper roll fail when someone else is on your carry.

How does comp choice affect your rank in TFT?

Comp selection is where most LP is won and lost, and the pattern is consistent: players who force one comp every game climb quickly for a patch and then stall, while players who pivot based on their opening items and augment offers stay stable across whole sets. Riot rebalances constantly, so a comp that dominated last patch can be unplayable in the next one.

That churn is why TFT rewards time more than mechanics, and why a set change resets everyone. If you cannot keep up with the patch cycle, a TFT rank boost keeps the account current through the churn, and duo players can climb together through Double Up boosting.

Comp vs meta: what is the difference?

A comp is one specific board you can build. The meta is the set of comps that are currently strongest across the whole player base on the current patch. Every meta comp is a comp, but plenty of viable comps sit outside the meta, and those are often the better choice in a lobby where everyone is copying the same tier list. Playing off meta into an uncontested unit pool regularly beats playing the strongest comp in a lobby where three players want it.

FAQ

Should you force one comp in TFT? It depends. Forcing a single comp is the fastest way to learn its lines and works well in low ranks, but it caps your climb once lobbies start contesting the same units.

Can you change your comp mid game? Yes. Pivoting is a core skill, and the best moment is right after an augment or a carousel item that pushes you towards a different carry.

How many units does a comp need? It depends on the plan. Reroll comps stay small and rely on three star upgrades, while fast eight comps want the full board of eight or nine units to activate their traits.
