League of Legends LP cutoff FAQ

What the Challenger and Grandmaster cutoffs are, why they move, how often we read them and what the leaderboard around the line shows.

  • What is the Challenger cutoff in League of Legends?

Challenger is not an LP threshold but a fixed number of seats per server: 300 on EUW, KR and NA, 200 on most other platforms, 50 on the smallest. Riot ranks every Master+ player by LP and the top N hold the seats, so the cutoff is the LP of the last player inside plus one. It moves every day as the players around it win and lose.

  • How is the Grandmaster cutoff different?

Grandmaster works the same way, one tier down: after the Challenger seats are filled, the next block of players by LP holds Grandmaster (700 on EUW, KR and NA, 500 on the mid-size servers, 100 on the small ones). Both tiers also have a floor: 500 LP for Challenger and 200 LP for Grandmaster, below which nobody is promoted even if a seat is free.

  • How often does the cutoff update?

We read the full Master, Grandmaster and Challenger ladders from the Riot API every hour on every server and store the reading, which is what the chart is built from. The page also refreshes on demand when the last reading is older than the schedule, so the number you see is at most about an hour old.

  • Why did my LP go above the cutoff but I am still Grandmaster?

Riot applies apex promotions and demotions in a daily ladder update, not the moment you cross the line. Sit above the cutoff at the time of the update and you are promoted; dip below it before then and you are not. The tracker shows the live line, the tier change follows on the next update.

  • Which servers does the tracker cover?

Every League of Legends platform: EUW, EUNE, NA, KR, BR, LAN, LAS, OCE, TR, RU, JP, ME, SEA, TW and VN. Each server and tier has its own page, so you can bookmark the one you climb on. The comparison table lower on the page shows the same tier on every server side by side.

  • What does the 48-hour change tell me?

The chip under the headline compares the current cutoff with the reading from two days earlier. A rising number means the players around the line are gaining LP faster than they lose it, typically mid-season; a falling number usually follows decay, a patch or the end-of-season slowdown. Use it to judge whether the LP you still need is a moving target.

  • Who is on the leaderboard around the cutoff?

The rows are the players immediately above and below the line at the last reading: the last few inside the tier and the first few just outside, with their Riot ID, LP and record. It shows how tight the race at the cutoff is, which is often a handful of LP.

  • Does LP decay affect the cutoff?

Yes. Master+ players lose LP after days without ranked games, which pulls inactive accounts below the line and lowers the cutoff in quiet periods such as patch weeks and holidays. It is one reason the chart dips even when nobody is losing games.

  • What if the tracker shows no reading for a server?

The first reading for a server is taken on the next hourly pass after the tracker starts, and a Riot outage can skip one. The page queues a refresh as soon as anyone opens it, so a missing number normally fills in within minutes.

  • How do I reach Challenger faster?

The cutoff tells you the LP; the wins calculator turns that into net wins at your win rate. For the climb itself, EB24 offers Master and Grandmaster division boosting by verified Challenger players, duo boosting if you want to play the games, and coaching to raise the win rate that decides how long the last stretch takes.

Behind the number

How the LoL cutoff tracker works

The line is derived from the full apex ladder the Riot API publishes, sorted the way Riot seats the tiers. Here is the exact path from the ladder to the LP you read.

zippy
1

We read the whole apex ladder every hour On every server the tracker pulls the full Challenger, Grandmaster and Master lists from the official Riot API: every player, their LP and their record. No login, no scraping, the same data the client shows.

2

The ladder is sorted the way Riot seats it All Master+ players go into one list ordered by LP. The top N hold the Challenger seats for that server, the next block holds Grandmaster. The seat counts are fixed per platform, which is why the same LP is Challenger on OCE and Master on EUW.

3

The cutoff is the last seat plus one LP The LP of the last player inside the tier, plus one, is what you need to take a seat at the next daily update. Riot also keeps a floor of 500 LP for Challenger and 200 for Grandmaster, so the cutoff never drops below it even on quiet servers.

4

Every reading is kept for the chart Hourly readings are stored per server and tier, so the chart shows how the line moved over the last 30 days and the chip shows the change over 48 hours. The leaderboard lists the players just inside and just outside the line at the latest reading.

How the Challenger and Grandmaster Cutoff Works

Below Master, every League of Legends rank is a fixed LP band: 100 LP per division, promote at the top, demote at the bottom. Master, Grandmaster and Challenger share one open LP pool instead, and the two top tiers are limited to a fixed number of seats per server. Riot sorts every Master+ player by LP; the top N are Challenger, the next block Grandmaster, everyone else Master. The cutoff is the LP that gets you the last seat.

For a fast feel: on EUW the 300th-best Master+ player by LP sits around 1,000 to 1,400 LP mid-season, so Challenger needs one LP more than that. On a small server such as OCE the same 50-seat tier can start under 800 LP. The tracker above reads the exact line every hour; if the LP between you and it looks like a season of games, Master and Grandmaster boosting covers that stretch with a verified Challenger player.

The four things that define the line

Seats per server
Challenger holds 300 players on EUW, KR and NA, 200 on the mid-size servers and 50 on the small ones; Grandmaster holds 700, 500 and 100 respectively. Fewer seats do not mean a lower line: a busy 200-seat server can have a higher Brazil cutoff than a quiet 300-seat one.
The LP floor
Riot never promotes below 500 LP for Challenger or 200 LP for Grandmaster, whatever the seat count. Early in a season, before the top of the ladder has climbed, the floor is the cutoff on most servers.
The daily apex update
Seats are reassigned once a day, not on every game. Sitting above the line at the time of the update is what promotes you; crossing it at 3 pm and dropping back by the evening does not.
Decay and activity
Master+ accounts lose LP after days without ranked games. Inactive players sink below the line, which lowers the cutoff during patch weeks, exams and holidays and raises it again when the server is busy.

Grandmaster seats are counted after the Challenger seats are filled, so the Grandmaster line is the LP of the (Challenger + Grandmaster)th player plus one.

What Moves the Cutoff Up and Down

The seat count is fixed by Riot. What changes is how much LP the players holding the last seats have, and that responds to a few predictable forces you can read on the chart.

What actually moves the line

  • Season timing: the line starts at the floor after a reset and climbs for months as the top of the ladder accumulates LP, then flattens or dips before the season ends
  • Server activity: more Master+ players queueing means more LP flowing into the pool around the line, so busy weekends push it up
  • LP decay: inactive apex accounts bleed LP and fall below the line, pulling the cutoff down in quiet periods
  • Patches and events: a big patch or a new champion brings players back and the line recovers within days

What the tracker reads

  • Every Master, Grandmaster and Challenger entry on the server, with LP, wins and losses
  • The seat counts for the platform, to find the last player inside each tier
  • The reading time, so the chart, the 48-hour chip and "updated x minutes ago" stay honest
  • Riot IDs of the players around the line, resolved through the official account API

How the line behaves through a season

The same server tells a similar story every split. Here is what the chart usually looks like at each stage.

First two weeks
The cutoff sits on the floor (500 LP Challenger, 200 LP Grandmaster) because too few players have climbed above it. Seats are free; LP is the only barrier.
Weeks three to eight
The fastest rise: the top of the ladder settles and the line climbs by tens of LP a day on large servers. The 48-hour chip is positive most of the time.
Mid-season
The line oscillates within a band, rising on busy weekends and dipping with decay. This is where the leaderboard race around the cutoff is tightest.
Final weeks
Players lock in their rank and stop queueing, decay bites, and the line can fall. A late push often needs less LP than it did a month earlier.

What does not move the cutoff

Common beliefs that do not change where the line sits.

  • Your own games: one player cannot move a line defined by hundreds of others
  • Flex queue: the apex tiers tracked here are Ranked Solo/Duo only
  • Other servers: every platform has its own ladder and its own seats
  • Promotion series: apex promotions are daily seat reassignments, there is no series to win
  • Hidden MMR: seats go by visible LP, not by the rating behind it

Cutoffs by Server

Every League of Legends platform has its own Master+ ladder, its own seat count and its own line. The Korean Challenger cutoff is usually the highest, EUW and NA follow, and the small servers sit far lower for the same seats. The links below open the live tracker for each server, and the account pages show what a Master+ account on that server is worth.

How to Get Over the Line

The tracker tells you the LP. Getting there is a matter of net wins at the top of the ladder, where every game is against players as good as you. Everything below either shortens the gap, protects the LP you already hold, or removes the grind.

Turn the gap into games
Paste the cutoff into the LoL wins calculator as the LP you need: it reads your live LP and tells you the net wins and games at your win rate.
Push while the line is low
Watch the chart. After a patch or during a holiday dip the same seats cost fewer LP; a push timed to a trough can save weeks of games.
Never let decay eat your buffer
A Master+ account loses LP after a few days idle. Holding 30 LP above the line means nothing if a week off drops you under it before the daily update.
Check whether your LP gains are honest
Run the LoL MMR checker: if your MMR trails your LP, wins pay less and losses cost more right at the line. Coaching fixes that faster than more games do.
Skip the grind at the top
LoL division boosting covers Master and Grandmaster climbs on your account with a verified Challenger player, or as duo boosting if you want to play. Net wins boosting buys the exact number of wins the calculator counted.

Come back to the tracker before every session: the line you saw yesterday is not the line you will be judged against at the next update. If you would rather start from Master, compare accounts on the LoL marketplace.

Reading the Tracker

The card gives you one number and three ways to judge it. Here is how to read each part.

  • The headline LP is the cutoff at the last reading: hold at least this much LP at the daily update and you take a seat.
  • The 48-hour chip is the change since two days ago. Up means the race is heating up; down means the line is sliding toward you.
  • The 30-day chart shows one point per day. Use the slope to decide whether to push now or wait for a dip.
  • The leaderboard lists the players just inside and just outside the line, with their LP: the gap between the last seat and the first player out is how tight the race is.

What each reading means for you

You are above the line
Keep the buffer. Play enough to avoid decay, avoid tilt sessions, and check the chip: a fast-rising line can overtake a small lead within days.
Within 100 LP
Four or five net wins at apex LP gains. A short block of LoL coaching or a timed push after a dip is usually enough.
Several hundred LP away
Weeks of ranked at a good win rate. This is the range where Master and Grandmaster boosting or a Master account is the honest comparison.

Methodology: How We Measure the Cutoff

The number is reproducible from public data. Here is every step, what it reads, and what it deliberately leaves out.

Where the ladder comes from
Every hour, per server, the tracker reads the complete Challenger, Grandmaster and Master lists for Ranked Solo/Duo through the official Riot API. Each entry carries LP, wins and losses.
How the seats are assigned
All entries are merged and sorted by LP, wins as a tie-break. The top N by seat count are Challenger, the next M Grandmaster, using the per-server seat counts in the table under "How the cutoff works".
How the cutoff is derived
The cutoff is the LP of the last seated player plus one, never below the 500 / 200 LP floor. If a server has fewer eligible players than seats, the floor is the cutoff.
What it cannot see
The exact time of Riot’s daily apex update and any games played since the last hourly reading. Treat the number as the line at the reading time, within an hour of live.

Want the wins behind the LP? The LoL wins calculator counts them from your live rank, and the account value calculator tells you what a Master+ account is worth once you hold the seat.
