Build de Nidalee en LoL Classic: Offtank AD Top

Build de Nidalee en LoL Classic: Offtank AD Top
Build de Nidalee en LoL Classic: Offtank AD Top

Everyone who queues up old Nidalee wants to do the same thing: hit a 1500 range spear across the river and feel like it is 2013 again. I did it too. Then I lost lane four times in a row to a Garen who simply walked at me while I was busy being a sniper, and I started building her the way she actually wants to be built in a solo lane.

This is the Nidalee LoL Classic build I have been running in top lane since the mode went live: AD offtank, cougar first, spear second. It is not a burst mage guide. It is a guide about a melee brawler who happens to own a javelin.

TL;DR: max Primal Surge, then Javelin Toss, and take Aspect of the Cougar at 6/11/16. Build Blade of the Ruined King into Trinity Force and Frozen Mallet, then finish with real resistances. Run an Attack Damage rune page and a 9/21/0 mastery split. Cougar Takedown scales with Attack Damage, the spear does not, and you still max it second for the base damage.

The Old Kit

Old Nidalee shares a name and almost nothing else with the champion currently on the live Rift. There is no Hunt mechanic, no Hunted marks, no bonus movement speed toward a tagged enemy, and no cooldown reduction on a Hunted Pounce. What you get instead is a clean two-form champion with a very long spear, a very long-lasting trap, and a self-buff that is quietly the best button in the kit for this build.

Key

Human Form

Cougar Form

Passive

Prowl. 15% bonus movement speed for 2 seconds after moving through brush.

Same passive, plus 20 bonus movement speed while transformed.

Q

Javelin Toss. 1500 range skillshot, 50/95/140/185/230 (+65% AP) scaling up to 125/237.5/350/462.5/575 (+162.5% AP) based on distance travelled.

Takedown. Empowers the next basic attack within 10 seconds for 40/70/100 bonus physical damage, increased by up to 200% based on the target's missing health. Scales with Attack Damage.

W

Bushwhack. Trap that arms in 1.5 seconds, lasts up to 240 seconds, deals 80/125/170/215/260 (+40% AP) over 2 seconds and cuts Armor and Magic Resist by 20/25/30/35/40% for 12 seconds.

Pounce. Fixed distance leap dealing 125/175/225 (+60% AP) on arrival.

E

Primal Surge. Heals 50/85/120/155/190 (+70% AP) and grants 20/30/40/50/60% Attack Speed for 7 seconds.

Swipe. 180 degree slash for 150/225/300 (+60% AP).

R

Aspect of the Cougar. Swaps forms on a 4 second cooldown. Human is ranged at 525, cougar is melee at 125. Cougar abilities scale off the rank of Aspect of the Cougar, not their own ranks.

Two details carry this entire build. First, Primal Surge's Attack Speed persists into cougar form if you cast it on yourself before transforming. Second, Bushwhack's resistance shred is percentage based and lasts 12 seconds, which is an absurd number on a trap that sits on the map for four minutes.

Why Nidalee Works as an AD Offtank Top

The instinct is to look at a 162.5% AP ratio and build Ability Power. In a solo lane against a melee bruiser, that gets you a champion who deals real damage roughly once every six seconds and dies to anyone who closes the gap.

The AD offtank version answers the actual problem. Aspect of the Cougar gives you 20 bonus movement speed and a leap. Prowl gives you 15% more on top of that through any brush, and top lane is full of brush. Primal Surge gives you a heal and up to 60% Attack Speed that follows you into melee. Takedown gives you an execute that gets stronger the lower your target's health is. That is a bruiser's toolkit wearing a mage's splash art.

What you are building toward is simple: get on top of a target, survive the counterattack, and let cougar autos plus Takedown do the work while Bushwhack has already deleted a third of their Armor.

The honest tradeoff. You give up the highlight reel. A full AP old Nidalee genuinely does delete squishies from screens away, and if your team already has front line and you want to play a siege mage, build that instead. This build trades a 350 damage spear for a champion who wins a 10 second fight and then walks to the next one.

Nidalee LoL Classic Build: Items and Order

Start. Doran's Blade and a Health Potion. The Blade is what turns your level 1 auto attack into a real threat, and this build wins lane through auto attacks long before it wins anything through abilities. Doran's Shield is a concession I only make against a lane that has already beaten me twice.

Core, in order:

  1. Blade of the Ruined King. The single most important item in the build. Attack Speed, Life Steal, percent current health damage on hit, and an active that steals movement speed. It fixes access and sustain in one purchase, and it makes every cougar auto matter against health stackers.

  2. Trinity Force. Nidalee swaps forms on a 4 second cooldown and casts constantly, so Sheen procs are basically free. You also get Attack Speed, movement speed, and the slow on hit that keeps targets inside Swipe range.

  3. Frozen Mallet. This is what turns you from a diver into an offtank. Health plus a permanent slow on every attack means the cougar simply never loses contact.

Boots. Ninja Tabi against an AD lane, Mercury's Treads when the enemy team has meaningful crowd control. Boots of Swiftness are defensible if you are already ahead and want to abuse Prowl.

Finishing two slots. Pick the resistance you actually need. Frozen Heart against attack speed carries, because the aura attacks their damage and the Cooldown Reduction shortens your form swaps and Primal Surge. Randuin's Omen when you need Health and an active that stops a diving carry from doing anything for a moment. Spirit Visage against magic damage, and it is the sneaky best item in the build because it amplifies Primal Surge and Blade of the Ruined King's Life Steal at the same time.

Do not buy all five defensive options and then wonder why you deal no damage. Two resistance items, three damage items, boots. That is the shape.

Skill order: max Primal Surge first, Javelin Toss second, Bushwhack last, with Aspect of the Cougar at 6, 11, and 16 without exception. Cougar abilities scale off the rank of R, so every point in it upgrades Takedown, Pounce, and Swipe at once.

Primal Surge first is not a debate. It is your sustain, your Attack Speed, and the reason you win extended trades. Javelin Toss second surprises people in an Attack Damage build, but the base damage alone goes from 50 to 230 at minimum range and from 125 to 575 at maximum, and none of that cares whether you own a single point of Ability Power. It is free damage on a 1500 range button. Bushwhack is last because rank 1 already gives you a four minute trap and a 20% resistance shred, and the extra ranks are the smallest upgrade in the kit.

Nidalee LoL Classic Runes and Masteries

Runes are the original individually bought pages here, all at Tier 3 quality, so you can build a genuinely specialised page without paying a tax for it.

  • Marks: 8 Attack Damage and 1 Critical Chance. The eight AD marks are the point, the single crit mark is there because an early critical strike in a level 1 or level 2 auto attack trade decides the lane more often than an extra fraction of AD would.

  • Seals: Armor. Non negotiable in top lane.

  • Glyphs: Magic Resist. You already buy Spirit Visage later, this covers the early gap and keeps you healthy against mage tops and enemy jungle damage.

  • Quintessences: Attack Damage. Everything in the build converts flat AD into cougar damage and into the auto attacks that win your lane.

For masteries, I run 9 offense and 21 defense. This is the part where people building her like a mid laner get it wrong. The nine offensive points go into the early attack speed and cooldown reduction that support Primal Surge and the form swap, with Fury and Sorcery as the priorities. Everything else goes into the defensive tree. ( Remember to always choose, between Resistance and Hardiness, Depends on the AP or AD matchup

Twenty one points in defense is what makes the offtank label honest rather than decorative. You are a ranged champion who voluntarily walks into melee range every time you press R, and no item build fixes that on its own. The defensive tree is what lets you leap in at level 6 with a Doran's Blade and come out alive.

The mastery reset is free outside of matches, so there is no reason to force one page onto both a jungle Nidalee and a top lane Nidalee. Respec between games.

How to Play the Lane

Levels 1 to 5. This is the easiest part of playing her, and it is also where most Nidalee players throw the lane away by trying to be clever.

You start Doran's Blade and you hold the wave. That is the whole plan. You have 525 attack range, an AD rune page, and a Doran's Blade, which means your level 1 auto attack is landing for close to 100 flat damage. Almost nothing that walks to top lane wants to trade autos with that. So do not shove, do not chase the spear, just sit on your side of the wave and punish every single time the enemy steps up to last hit.

Use the brush. Stepping into brush drops minion aggro, which means you can auto attack an enemy champion inside your own wave and walk out without a wave of minions turning on you. Prowl also gives you 15% movement speed for 2 seconds every time you pass through, so the same movement that resets aggro also lets you reposition faster than they can.

In bigger trades, cast Primal Surge on yourself before anything else. You get the heal and up to 60% Attack Speed for 7 seconds, and because it is your max priority the heal reaches 190 at rank 5. At the level where that comes online, that is roughly half your health bar on a 10 second cooldown. Your lane sustain is not a Doran's Shield or a potion, it is an ability, and it means you can lose an exchange on paper and still be the healthier champion 8 seconds later.

Level 6 onward. This is where the trade pattern changes. Land Bushwhack on them or make them step into an armed one, cast Primal Surge on yourself for the heal and Attack Speed, swap to cougar, Pounce in, Takedown auto, Swipe, then swap back to human and walk away at ranged distance. The shred from the trap applies for 12 seconds, which comfortably covers the whole sequence, and the Attack Speed from Primal Surge follows you into cougar form.

The mistake I kept making. Swapping to cougar before Bushwhack is armed. The trap needs 1.5 seconds to become stealthed and ready. If you leap first, you are a melee champion standing next to a bruiser with none of your Armor shred online.

Mid game. Nidalee is very fast and very hard to catch, and you own permanent vision in whichever brush you decide matters. Trap the enemy jungle entrances, trap the river brush, and pick off anyone walking alone. Takedown against a target below half health is genuinely violent, and Blade of the Ruined King's active means the runner is slower than you are.

Teamfights. You are not the engage and you are not the front line. Wait until someone is already committed, then dive the health bar that is lowest. If access is impossible, stay in human form on the edge of the fight and throw spears at whoever is retreating. Being able to switch between those two jobs mid fight is the entire reason to play her.

Matchups and What Beats You

Ranged tops are your good matchups because human form Nidalee out ranges most of them early and cougar closes the gap after 6.

Sustained melee damage is your problem. Anything that wins an extended melee exchange without needing to gapclose punishes the moment you enter cougar form. Respect that you have no crowd control at all in this build. Not one stun, not one root.

Hard crowd control ends you. Pounce is a fixed distance leap that can be interrupted, and once you are in melee form with 125 range and a knockup on you, there is no escape button that does not cost your entire fight rotation.

The general rule: if the enemy can hold you in place, you need an ally who commits with you. If they cannot, you decide when every fight starts and ends.

What Changed From Live Nidalee

Almost everything except the silhouette.

  • The passive. Classic Prowl is a flat 15% movement speed boost through brush and nothing else. Live Nidalee's passive carries the entire Hunt system, the bonus movement speed toward hunted targets, and the ability empowerment. None of that exists here.

  • Javelin Toss. Similar concept, different numbers, and no Hunt bonus to reward landing it.

  • Bushwhack. Classic traps last 240 seconds, tick for 2 seconds, and shred resistances by up to 40%. Live traps are a vision and Hunt tool first. The Classic version is a real combat ability.

  • Takedown. Scales off missing health up to a 200% increase and, in this build, off your Attack Damage. There is no Hunted damage bonus to chase.

  • Pounce. Fixed distance, always. No extended range on a hunted target, no cooldown refund. Plan your leap accordingly.

The most dangerous habit to carry over from live is treating the spear as a setup tool for a guaranteed cougar burst. Without Hunt, there is no reward for connecting them. They are two separate tools that happen to live on the same champion.

Who Should Play This

Play AD offtank Nidalee if you liked bruisers that win by never letting go, and if you are comfortable making a decision about which form you want to be in roughly every four seconds. She has a real skill ceiling, but almost none of it lives in the spear.

Do not pick her if you want a front line, if your team has no engage, or if you are hoping to farm safely for 20 minutes. She is the champion who decides that the enemy jungler is not allowed to have a jungle anymore.
