When and where MSI takes place
The 2026 Mid-Season Invitational ran from June 28 to July 12 in Daejeon, South Korea, at the Daejeon Convention Center II, with a $2,000,000 prize pool and eleven teams competing. An LCK team took the title for the third consecutive year, bringing the region level with the LPL on all-time MSI wins.
The host city rotates every year, which is half the appeal of the event. Recent editions have run through Vancouver, Chengdu, London, Busan and Reykjavík.
How the tournament is structured
The format splits into a Play-In stage, where four teams fight through a double elimination bracket for a single remaining spot, followed by a Bracket Stage running to the final. The entire event is played in best of five, which is unusually demanding and a large part of why MSI results are taken so seriously.
The winner also secures a qualification path to Worlds, and the second placed team's region gains an additional seed for its domestic league.

MSI versus Worlds versus First Stand
Riot now runs three international events a year and they are easy to confuse.
First Stand opens the season and is the smallest of the three. MSI sits at the midpoint and carries real Worlds implications. Worlds closes the year in October and November and is the one that defines legacies. The 2026 World Championship runs from 15 October to 14 November in the United States.
MSI is also where new formats get stress tested. Fearless Draft, which bans champions across an entire series rather than a single game, debuted at MSI in 2025.
Playing on the patch the pros play
International events run on a locked patch, and the meta that emerges from them reshapes solo queue within days. If you want to climb while that window is open, division boosting moves the rank and pro games puts you in a lobby with players who actually compete at that level.
