Tristana LoL Classic Build: AP Mid or Bot

Tristana LoL Classic Build: AP Mid or Bot
Tristana LoL Classic Build: AP Mid or Bot

AP Tristana is the most fun I have had in League Classic, and I want to be honest about that before anything else. This is not a build I am recommending because it is safe. It is a build where you press four buttons in the right order and an enemy carry disappears, and where they spend the next thirty seconds in chat asking what just happened, because a Tristana was not supposed to do that.

It is also a build with a real, structural weakness that almost nobody mentions until you have already played ten games of it. I will get to that, because it is the reason most people drop the pick after two games instead of learning it.

TL;DR: run Marks of Magic Penetration, Seals of Armor, Glyphs of Magic Resist, and Quintessences of flat Ability Power, with 21 offense and 9 defense. Start Doran's Ring or Amplifying Tome with potions, rush Mejai's Soulstealer, then Deathfire Grasp, boots, Rabadon's Deathcap, and Lich Bane. The combo is W, Deathfire Grasp, E, R. Sometimes only Deathfire Grasp and R.

The Old Kit and Why the Ratios Are Absurd

Classic Tristana still has the ability power scalings that got removed from her years ago. This is not a nostalgia build, it is a build that exists because the numbers in this client are numbers Riot deliberately took away from her later.

Key

Ability

Numbers that matter

P

Draw a Bead

Basic attacks and Explosive Shot gain 0 to 153 bonus range by level, for 550 up to 703 total.

Q

Rapid Fire

50 mana, 20 second cooldown, 30/45/60/75/90% Attack Speed for 7 seconds.

W

Rocket Jump

80 mana, 22/20/18/16/14 second cooldown, 900 range. 70/115/160/205/250 (+80% AP) magic damage in a 350 radius, plus a 60% slow for 2.5 seconds. Resets on champion takedown.

E

Explosive Shot

50 to 90 mana, 16 second cooldown. Passive: enemies killed by your basic attacks explode for 50/75/100/125/150 (+25% AP). Active: 110/150/190/230/270 (+100% AP) over 5 seconds plus 50% Grievous Wounds.

R

Buster Shot

100 mana, 100 second cooldown. 300/400/500 (+150% AP) magic damage, a 600 to 1000 unit knockback, and a 0.4 to 0.7 second stun.

Add the ratios up. Rocket Jump, Explosive Shot, and Buster Shot together carry 330% of your Ability Power, and every one of them is magic damage on a champion the enemy team has mentally filed as an auto attacker. That is the entire build in one sentence.

Why This Deletes People

The combo is embarrassingly simple. W, Deathfire Grasp, E, R. You jump on top of them, which slows them by 60% so leaving is not an option, you press Deathfire Grasp for a chunk of their maximum Health and a 20% magic damage amplification, you apply Explosive Shot, and you finish with Buster Shot. Everything after the jump lands inside the amplification window.

Against a squishy carry it is not really a fight. Often you do not even need the full rotation. Deathfire Grasp plus Buster Shot is enough on its own once you have a Deathcap, and the knockback means whatever is left of them ends up somewhere they did not want to be.

The reason it works so reliably is not damage, it is expectation. Nobody itemises Magic Resist against a Tristana. Nobody positions against a Tristana as if she is an assassin. You get to open every fight against a target who made their positioning decision based on a champion that does not exist in this build.

When it stops working. A Malphite who has actually built full Magic Resist is a genuine problem, and so is anyone who buys Banshee's Veil early or gets a Black Shield onto the target. Your burst is entirely magic damage, so a single well timed defensive item or spell shield turns the whole rotation into a small inconvenience. Against an enemy carry, though, you kill them roughly every time, and they will not see it coming.

Tristana LoL Classic Build: Items

Start. Doran's Ring and two Health Potions, or an Amplifying Tome and potions if you would rather have the raw Ability Power and start building toward the first real item.

Mejai's Soulstealer, as early as you can. This is the single most important purchase in the build and the one people skip because they think it is greedy. It is not greedy, it is cheap. For a very small amount of gold you get an item that turns your first few kills into an enormous power spike, and this build is designed to get kills. A stacked Mejai's is more Ability Power than most completed items in the shop, and it costs a fraction of what they do. Buy it, then play like you intend to keep the stacks.

Deathfire Grasp. The active is why. It takes a percentage of the target's maximum Health on cast and then amplifies all magic damage they take for the next few seconds, which means it makes W, E, and R all hit harder at the same time. Deathfire Grasp is not a damage item on this build, it is the opening of the combo.

Boots. Sorcerer's Shoes in most games. Boots of Mobility if you are roaming and the enemy has no dive threat on you.

Rabadon's Deathcap. Obvious with 330% of ratios to multiply.

Lich Bane. Your basic attack after a cast finally means something, and you cast constantly.

Final slot, read the game. Void Staff when they have started buying Magic Resist, which is the usual answer if you are ahead. If you are dying before you finish the combo, Zhonya's Hourglass or Banshee's Veil instead. Guardian Angel is the pick when you are carrying with Mejai's stacks you cannot afford to lose.

Skill order. Max E first for the ratio and the wave clear, then W, then Q, with R at 6, 11, and 16. Q is last because Attack Speed does nothing for a champion whose Attack Damage is a rounding error.

Runes and Masteries

Marks of Magic Penetration. Flat penetration early is worth more than raw AP against targets with 30 base Magic Resist.

Seals of Armor. Standard, and you need it in both lanes this build is played in.

Glyphs of Magic Resist. You are squishy and you are usually standing across from a mage.

Quintessences of flat Ability Power. These make your level 1 and level 2 numbers real, which matters on a champion whose early damage is otherwise entirely dependent on items.

Masteries: 21 offense, 9 defense. The offensive tree does the obvious work with cooldown reduction, magic penetration, and percentage Ability Power. The nine defensive points exist because you are a 497 Health champion who deliberately jumps into range of the enemy team. Utility is the tempting alternative and I would not fight anyone who runs it, but this build already gets its movement from Rocket Jump.

Laning Phase

The lane itself is pleasant. You have 550 base range that grows every level, so trading is mostly a matter of pressing E on the enemy laner and following it with basic attacks while they decide whether to walk at you. Explosive Shot is a damage over time with Grievous Wounds attached, so it also blanks the sustain of anyone trying to heal through your poke.

This build works in both mid and bot. If your jungler, mid, and top are all playing Attack Damage champions, an AP Tristana in the bot lane is a completely reasonable flex that gives your team a magic damage threat without giving up a marksman slot in the draft. That flexibility is one of the better reasons to learn her.

The Farming Problem, Which Is the Real Reason People Drop This Pick

Here is the part almost every guide leaves out.

Tristana has a serious problem farming minions, and AP Tristana makes it much worse. Farming in League Classic is not easy to begin with. There are no free waveclear tools, minions have a lot of relative Health, and turret plates do not exist to bail you out. Now put that on a champion who has bought zero Attack Damage. Your basic attacks hit for almost nothing. Under your own turret, they very often do not hit hard enough to finish a minion the turret has already damaged, and you simply watch the wave die.

Someone will immediately say: just use W to damage the wave and let the Explosive Shot passive clean up the rest. That is a real technique and yes, it works. The problem is what it costs you.

Rocket Jump has an 80 mana cost and a cooldown between 22 and 14 seconds depending on rank, and it is your only escape in the entire kit. The moment you spend it on a minion wave, you are a 497 Health ranged champion standing in a lane with no mobility, no dash, and no defensive ability, for up to twenty two seconds. If the enemy jungler arrives in that window, you die. If a fight starts in that window, you die. You are not a difficult target, you are the easiest target on the map.

So the real skill of this build is not the combo. The combo is four buttons. The skill is deciding when a minion is worth your escape, and being disciplined enough to give up gold rather than give up your jump when the enemy jungler is unaccounted for. Track the jungler, farm freely when you know where he is, and accept a worse creep score when you do not.

If you cannot make peace with that trade, this build will feel terrible no matter how good the burst is.

What Changed From Live Tristana

  • Explosive Shot does not exist on live Tristana at all. Modern Tristana has Explosive Charge, a physical damage bomb that stacks off her basic attacks. The Classic version is a magic damage over time with Grievous Wounds and a passive that explodes minions you kill.

  • The ability power ratios. Classic keeps the scalings that made this build famous. Live Tristana's magic scalings were cut down specifically to end it.

  • Rocket Jump resets on a champion takedown here. It does not reset off detonating a charge at max stacks, because there are no charges to stack.

  • Buster Shot applies a short stun alongside the knockback in this version, which is a genuinely useful detail that most players do not notice.

  • The role. Live Tristana is a marksman, full stop. Classic Tristana is a marksman whose kit accidentally reads as a burst mage, and the client never patched out the accident.

Who Should Play This

Play AP Tristana if you enjoy picks, if you can track an enemy jungler, and if you are willing to lose creep score to keep an escape. The payoff is one of the most satisfying burst rotations in the mode against opponents who have no reason to expect it.

Do not play it if you want to farm safely to twenty minutes, if your team has no front line, or if the enemy team already has two champions building Magic Resist for other reasons. Play the crit build then. It exists for a reason.
