What is a MOBA Game?
MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, a genre where two teams of five control individual heroes on a fixed map and push toward the enemy base. League of Legends, Dota 2 and Mobile Legends are the defining examples, and the genre has shaped competitive gaming for over a decade.

What makes a game a MOBA
Four things have to be present. Individual hero control rather than an army. A fixed symmetrical map, almost always three lanes with a jungle between them. In-match progression, meaning you start weak every single game and build power from zero over 30 minutes. And a single win condition: destroy the structure at the heart of the enemy base.
That third point is what separates MOBAs from everything else. Your account level and your unlocks do not carry into the match. Every game resets you to level one.
How a match is structured
Early game is laning, where players farm minions for gold while the jungler clears camps and looks for ganks. Mid game shifts to grouping and neutral objectives like dragons and Baron. Late game is decided by teamfights, where one lost fight can end the match outright.
MOBA versus the genres it gets confused with
Genre | Control | Progression | Match length |
|---|---|---|---|
MOBA | One hero | Resets every match | 25 to 45 min |
RTS | Full army | Resets every match | 15 to 40 min |
Hero shooter | One hero, first person | Mostly none | 5 to 15 min |
One character | Permanent | Continuous |
The phrase "MOBA shooter" usually describes hero shooters like Overwatch or Marvel Rivals, which borrowed hero design from MOBAs without the lanes, minions or in-match itemisation.
Why MOBAs are famously hard
League of Legends has over 170 champions. Learning what one does is easy. Learning what all of them do to you, across every item build, is the barrier that keeps new players in low ranks for months.
If you want to skip the slowest part of that curve, LoL boosting moves the rank while coaching builds the knowledge that keeps you there.
