¿Qué son los skins en los videojuegos?
Skins are cosmetic items that change how a character, weapon or vehicle looks without altering how it performs. They are the most common thing players buy in modern games, and in titles with open trading some skins hold genuine resale value.

Why players pay for something that does nothing
Three reasons, and only one is about looking good.
Identity comes first. In a game where everyone plays the same twenty characters, a skin is the only thing that makes your screen yours. Signalling comes second: a rare skin tells the lobby you were there for a specific event or have played since a specific year. Sunk investment comes third, since an account with a full collection is far harder to walk away from.
A fourth reason exists in a handful of games. Where skins trade freely, they stop being decoration and become an asset.
Cosmetic in theory, not always in practice
Most developers hold the line that skins must not affect gameplay, but the edges get blurry. Some League of Legends skins change animation timing or particle clarity enough that players argue about readability. Certain Fortnite skins have smaller visual profiles. Dark skins on dark maps in shooters have been patched more than once.
None of it rises to pay to win, but the claim that skins are purely visual is a simplification.
Tradeable versus locked
Game | Tradeable | What that means |
|---|---|---|
CS2 | Yes | A real secondary market with price histories |
Dota 2, Rust | Yes | Steam market trading with fees |
LoL, Valorant | No | Locked to your account permanently |
Fortnite | No | Account-bound, no legitimate trading |
In locked games the only route to a specific retired skin is the account it already sits on, which is why collections carry so much weight in account value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do skins give you any advantage?
No. Major developers design them as cosmetic only, though a few have been patched for visibility issues.
Can you sell League of Legends skins?
No. They are permanently bound to the account, which is why account value is tied to the collection on it.
Why are CS2 skins worth so much?
It depends on rarity, float and float-driven condition, but the core reason is a genuine open market with limited supply.
