League of Legends Winter Map Is Back!

League of Legends Winter Map Is Back!
League of Legends Winter Map Is Back!

If you’ve played League of Legends for a while, you probably remember the classic Snowdown-themed Rift. It first appeared all the way back in 2010, turning Summoner’s Rift into a snowy festival with frosty lanes, falling snowflakes, and festive minions. For years it came back during holiday events until Riot removed all seasonal map variants in 2018 because the Elemental Drake system made them impossible to maintain.

After seven long years, the community finally got what it had been asking for. The Winter Map returned in Patch 25.23, released on November 19, 2025 completely rebuilt using Riot’s updated map tools.

The Return of the Winter Map (2025)

Just like the original version, the 2025 Winter Map doesn’t change gameplay. All lanes, jungle paths, and objectives stay exactly the same. The update focuses purely on visuals, atmosphere, and seasonal flavor.

When you load into a match, the first thing you’ll notice is the thick snow covering every lane and jungle path. The river is frosted over, and the lighting shifts to a colder tone that makes everything feel like a winter evening. Riot added dozens of small visual touches too:

  • Baron Nashor appears in a full Santa outfit, complete with a red hat, green earmuffs, and fuzzy mittens on his claws.

  • Both Nexuses are transformed into glowing snow globes, with animated snowfall swirling inside.

  • Around each base, a small toy train carrying Poros loops around the structures.

  • Minions march down lanes wearing tiny winter jackets.

  • Rift Herald shows up with reindeer antlers and a glowing red Rudolph nose.

  • The entire map is decorated with holiday trees, sleds, candy canes, ornaments, wrapped presents, and snowmen.

Riot hasn’t announced exactly how long the Winter Map will stay active, but based on older Snowdown events, you can expect it to last around 30 - 35 days.

Fun Throwbacks & Hidden Details

The first Winter Map from 2010 actually had one of the funniest bugs in early League history: Baron Nashor’s Santa beard sometimes caused his jaw to detach and float next to his body.

The 2025 version includes some subtle references:

  • The Poro train is modeled after an old Snowdown loading screen animation.

  • Some snowmen in the jungle wear outfits inspired by discontinued skins from 2012.

  • The sparkling snow that falls near Dragon Pit is identical to an unused particle effect from a canceled Riot event project.

If you explore the map closely, you’ll find dozens of tiny festive touches this update was clearly made with love.

What’s Coming Next: The Demacia Map Update (Early 2026)

Season 1 of 2026 is expected to introduce a Demacia themed Summoner’s Rift, following the same map transformation format Riot used earlier in 2025 for the Noxus season.

That Noxus update completely reshaped the Rift visually with dark reds, militaristic structures, and hardened metal textures without touching gameplay. The Demacia update will follow the same idea.

Based on Demacia’s lore, the Rift will likely shift to bright petricite stone, gold accents, structured Renaissance-inspired architecture, clean lines, and noble colors. Even lane minions and structures may receive subtle thematic adjustments.

Riot hasn’t released official previews yet, but leaks suggest a full visual overhaul timed with the Season 1 launch.
