Is Marvel Rivals the Future of Marvel Video Games? Exploring the Potential of Hero Shooters

Is Marvel Rivals the Future of Marvel Video Games? Exploring the Potential of Hero Shooters

The Marvel Universe is vast. It has an impressive list of heroes and villains. The August 1961 launch of the Fantastic Four officially began the Marvel era. From there, fans were introduced to other icons such as Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. That’s just a small list from an enormous roster of characters who sum up the Marvel Universe.

The popularity of Marvel speaks for itself, given the successful runs of its comics and theatrical productions. This logic applies to video games as well. As long as Marvel Rivals and the other video games Marvel produces stay on track with their fan base, their future remains bright. Since launching in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has already surpassed gaming expectations.

Marvel’s core content in Marvel Rivals includes third-person views of playable characters and a destructible environment during gameplay. Although a free-to-play game, its long-term survival depends on microtransactions from its fan base. So far, this doesn’t seem to be a problem as fans rather enjoy the eye candy from the character costumes they’re buying. They can see their favorite hero sporting a costume while in combat. It’s not limited to lobby views like some other shooter-style games.

Setting New Standards

Marvel Rivals raised the content bar with its third-person shooter game by creating destructible environments in their maps. This adds a new dynamic as players watch out for the enemy team and the world they’re in as it can change in less than a heartbeat. And why shouldn’t this be the case? In the Marvel movies, buildings and objects were either caught in the crossfire or used as shields and weapons as enemies duked it out against each other.

It stands to reason that buildings and objects are just as prone to destruction as the enemies facing off against each other in a match.  Only Marvel Rivals seems to understand this reality and has fully worked with it as a key element in its gameplay mechanics. This dynamic has set a new standard in the gaming industry. If other game developers fail to capitalize on this, they’ll allow Marvel’s video games to dominate the competition.

A Fantastic Future

The gaming industry is in dire need of a major wake-up call. For too long, corporate greed has taken center stage while gamers suffer the consequences of these actions. Evidence of this can be seen with Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. What started as one of the most popular shooter games has since declined. It went from a gradual to a steep nosedive shortly after the 2024 release of Black Ops 6. Instead of sticking with developers and fans to keep C.O.D. great, Activision chose profit over people. This tactic only works short-term before it backfires into a costly mistake.

Marvel Rivals and other games from Marvel’s vault must focus on pleasing its fan base to achieve long-term success. As for its growth, that’ll come by sticking to the Marvel Universe formula that made it so great. They can’t allow greed to interfere with established legacies. Doing so will only hurt the franchise. This is a reality the likes of Activision, Disney, and Sony have yet to come to terms with.

Marvel has a fantastic opportunity to rise above the competition and stay on top for many years. As great as it seems to expand the universe with new characters and storylines, the development team can’t afford to cater to special interest groups as opposed to listening to its core fan base. These were mistakes made by too many gaming and theatrical studios that have resulted in the decline of quality content released in the entertainment

Marvel Rivals Universe

Marvel Rivals has the entire Marvel Universe to work with. There’s no need for this game to introduce new heroes and villains to make the game work. This is enough to win new gamers while maintaining its current fan base.

Marvel Rivals Season 1: Eternal Night Falls

The first season of Marvel Rivals gives us the Fantastic Four, a Dracula-based storyline, new maps, and the Doom game mode. Marvel Rivals started with thirty-three playable characters. It’ll be thirty-seven once season one is over. Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic were introduced once Season 1: Eternal Night Falls began. Human Torch and The Thing join mid-way as they take on Dracula and his horde.

Sanctum Santorum, Midtown, and Central Park are the new maps going into season one. These maps coincide with the Dracula storyline after Doctor Doom met his 2099 counterpart. This creates a timestream entanglement where heroes and villains across the multiverse square off against each other and Doom variants in different worlds. Dracula and Doctor Doom work together to hold New York in eternal darkness, giving cause for the Fantastic Four to join the original Marvel Rivals crew as they work to save the city.

Marvel Rivals Future Seasons

After season one, what’s next? What will season two bring? For now, NetEase games haven’t released any concrete details. Season one has only just begun. There’s plenty of time for players to accomplish their game-related goals. For now, it’s just speculation and rumors.

However, there are enough clues to determine what to expect in the Marvel Rivals universe. The first season will likely conclude around April 2025. If developers stick to this likely roadmap, the second season should be released that same month. However, in-game events and technical issues can easily change this projected schedule. So, again, we’re going on speculation here.

Marvel Rivals: Season 2 Possibilities

The second season will come with new challenges, a new battle pass, and new cosmetics. This also means new rewards. There’ll also be new playable characters but nothing (yet) has been leaked about who they are.

It likely won’t be until we’re closer to April 2025 to learn more about Marvel Rivals Season 2. However, NetEase Games intends to release eight playable characters per year. Season 1 brought the Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, the Human Torch, and The Thing. So who will Season 2 bring?

So far, the leaked heroes revealed by data miners are; Colossus, Cyclops, Deadpool, Jia Jang, Locus, Professor X, and Ultron. These are among over a dozen characters in the Marvel Rivals files who may join the roster within the next year or two. Along with these characters will be new team-ups and gameplay possibilities that will keep Marvel Rivals at the top as one of the most compelling live-stream games running today.
