Warcraft Rumble Mobile Game: A Deep Dive into Azeroth's Strategy Gaming Realm

On November 3, 2023, Blizzard Entertainment released Warcraft Rumble, a tower defense style mobile game that has brought the world of Azeroth to players around the world as the latest edition to the saga known as World of Warcraft (WoW).  Since 2004, WoW established itself as one of the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing games in existence.  Otherwise known as an MMORPG game, WoW takes players to a fantasy universe where Warcraft originally began its legacy in 1994.  Actually, WoW picks up where 2002’s Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos left off.

Let’s Rumble

At first, the game was called Warcraft Arclight Rumble when Blizzard Entertainment made its announcement on May 3, 2022.  Players were allowed to build armies with their heroes and villains from Warcraft, then battle it out in scenarios designed to test their tactical might.

Then on August 8, 2023, the game became Warcraft Rumble as Blizzard opted to drop Arclight from the title.  On November 3, 2023, the game was officially launched as Warcraft’s mobile spin-off game.  According to the Blizzard website dedicated to Warcraft Rumble, this action strategy game allows players to bring collectible Minis to life as they engage in melee combat.  

There is the option to follow the single-player campaign or play in multiplayer mode.  There are also opportunities to engage in player-versus-player (PVP) battles.  In the game, there are over sixty-five Warcraft Minis players have access to as they build their collection, as well as multiple armies.  The key to succeeding in Warcraft Rumble is to exercise a better strategy than your opponents.

The Gameplay

For the most part, Warcraft Rumble has been designed primarily as a player versus environment (PvE).  There are opportunities where players can team up in co-op mode to get the job done.  Whether going on these campaigns on your own or as a co-op, you encounter a representation of familiar locations such as Duskwood, Elwynn Forest, and Westfall.

Overall, there are seventy PvE maps available for players to access.  Each of them has its own boss and specifics players must find a way to work around.  Certain modes in the game only become available in the game after the player has earned enough skulls.

It wouldn’t be World of Warcraft without quests.  Warcraft Rumble has a quest system that has players engage in old maps to gain experience for specific units.  There is also a dungeon mode that behaves like a three-map gauntlet with a single military unit.  Every single map a player engages in has the opportunity to pick one new relic.  These relics have their own special buffs, each designed to improve a troop’s performance in areas such as health or speed.

Matches & Factions

A Warcraft Rumble match starts with deployment.  This is done by accessing the gold reserves to send the Minis and their teams to battle.  Their objective depends on what goals you’re out to achieve.  Do you want to capture guard towers and meeting stones?  After doing so, you can use them to deploy your Minis closer to other objectives such as marching to and conquering the enemy and its leader.

Within the Warcraft Rumble universe, there are five factions.  Each one has leaders who specialize in areas such as Alliance, Beast, Blackrock, Horde, and Undead.  As leaders, they’re more powerful than the rest of the unit.  Collectively, they can be classified as a flying, melee, or ranged unit.

Leaders & Units

Alliance leaders specialize in defense.  This includes healing and a heavy use of spells and stealth tactics.  Beast leaders focus on disabling enemy defenses so they can quickly overwhelm the enemy.  They can also use a flurry of fast-moving troops to swarm the enemy, just like a wolf pack pounces on a big lone bear.

Blackrock leaders reward players who use heavy-lifting flying troops and searing elemental magic users.  Horde leaders are notorious gatherers who rake in extra gold.  They also deploy highly motivated fast-attacking troops that focus on enemy control with stun tactics.  As for the Undread leaders, they use necromancy to summon an endless array of enemies to join the fight on the battlefield.

As a player, you have the option to choose your leaders and units.  Warcraft Rumble will not force you to choose just one faction.  You are free to choose up to all five.  With over sixty-five Warcraft Minis to collect, including leaders, this gives players a menu of options.

However, keep in mind Warcraft Rumble’s matches behave like a rock paper scissor game.  This means flying units usually beat melee units while melee units beat range units and range units beat flying units.

Resources

In Warcraft Rumble, the only way players can earn an in-game resource known as Valor is by going through and completing a dungeon.  As soon as dungeons are cleared, they level up.  However, these dungeons are only available for a limited amount of time.  Valor allows players to upgrade their leaders in the game.

An additional in-game resource players need to build on is gold.  These are used to deploy the Minis on the battlefield.  Gold can be collected as players passively earn this over time through mining and opening treasure chests.  You can also increase the gold rate by deploying a miner to harvest this valuable resource.

Since there are no loot boxes in Warcraft Rumble, players need to build their in-game coin reserves should they wish to access resources to level up.  If the process seems too long to accomplish, players can always invest real money to buy units.  Now, if you’re looking for NFTs, you’re out of luck.  Those don’t exist at Warcraft Rumble.

Rants & Raves

There are mixed reviews about Warcraft Rumble.  Among the fans who enjoy it, they’re happy with its free-to-play MMORPG format.  As for the critics, they found Blizzard Entertainment’s current vision when it comes to creating video games has lost its way in the name of corporate greed.

Warcraft Rumble has been designed to be a grinding game.  For players who love this, plus the real-time strategy it's designed to be, this is great.  However, given how tedious the tasks will be to build Minis, even as a free-to-play game it can really test a player’s patience.  To level up in the game, it will be necessary to repeatedly play previously completed missions and quests.  It’s either that or invest real money to speed up the upgrading process.

What kind of future Warcraft Rumble has as a game will depend greatly on how nostalgic WoW gamers choose to be.  Even with nostalgia in mind, the absence of loot boxes from the game has left a bad impression on many World of Warcraft fans.  For gamers new to Warcraft, it’s a free-to-play mobile game that does have its appeal.  However, how many will have the patience for it?  Only time will tell.
