You need 20 champions to play ranked, and because so much of the roster sits in the 225 and 675 tiers, reaching that number costs far less than it used to.

1. Farm Blue Essence Through the Battle Pass

The free Battle Pass track is now the biggest source of free Blue Essence.

• Play matchmade games. Normals, Ranked and ARAM all give pass progress.

• Complete daily and weekly missions. They are the fastest way to move through the pass, and most only take a few games.

• Finish the free track every Act. Rewards you do not claim before an Act ends are gone, so do not leave progress on the table.

2. Use Your Champion Shards Properly

Champion shards come from leveling up, capsules and chests. You can do two things with a shard:

• Upgrade it to unlock that champion at a discount.

• Disenchant it into Blue Essence.

The rule of thumb: if you want to play the champion, upgrade the shard, because it is cheaper than buying the champion outright. If you already own the champion or never plan to play it, disenchant it and put the Blue Essence toward someone you actually want.

3. Open Your Hextech Chests

Hextech Chests are back, but they come from different places than they used to.

How to earn them now:

• The free Battle Pass track gives 8 Hextech Chests and Keys per Act.

• Honor gives 2 more per Act. Keep a clean record and be a good teammate. Getting penalised resets your Honor and stops you earning these.

• The store sells chests for RP if you want more than the free ones.

That is up to 10 free chests and keys per Act. Key fragments no longer exist, because keys now come bundled with the chests. Any chests you already have stay in your inventory until you open them.

What is inside: skin shards are still the most common drop. Any shard you do not want can be disenchanted, which helps fund your next champion.

4. Try Before You Buy With the Free Rotation

Every week Riot puts a set of champions into the free rotation, so you can play them without unlocking them. Use it to test champions before you spend Blue Essence. The worst purchase in League is a champion you play twice and never touch again.

5. Use Riot Points for Instant Unlocks

If you want a champion right now, you can buy it with RP. Prices run from 260 RP to 975 RP depending on the tier.

Since champions are cheaper in Blue Essence than ever, RP is usually better spent on skins, with Blue Essence covering champions. If you do want to buy with RP, you can top up Riot Points through EB24.
