League of Legends has three popular game modes: ARAM, Summoner’s Rift, and Arena. The differences between them extend beyond the maps. We’ll explore these different game modes while you size up which one best suits your LoL playstyle.

About League of Legends

League of Legends was first introduced to gamers by Riot Games on October 27, 2009, as a player versus player multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, LoL is free to play, though players can spend real money on character customization.

Each match features two teams battling to destroy the enemy’s Nexus while defending their own. Since 2009, LoL has evolved with new game modes, frequent updates, and global popularity.

League of Legends is the world’s largest esport, with an international competitive scene featuring regional leagues and an annual World Championship. Beyond Summoner’s Rift, LoL has two other permanent game modes: ARAM and Arena.

ARAM

ARAM stands for All Random, All Mid. It’s a 5v5 game mode played on the Howling Abyss map with a single central lane. The goal is to destroy the enemy Nexus, and champions are randomly assigned from the champion pool (with options to trade or reroll).

Originating from custom games, ARAM became an official mode on June 29, 2012. The map includes two lane turrets, health relics, an inhibitor, two Nexus turrets, and a Nexus per team. There’s no jungle, no side lanes—just pure chaos and fun.

Summoner’s Rift

Summoner’s Rift is the primary and most strategic game mode in League of Legends. It features a traditional 5v5 setup with three lanes: top, mid, and bot. Players must destroy enemy turrets and inhibitors before reaching the Nexus.

This map demands teamwork, communication, and strategy. Matches can last from 15 minutes to over an hour, offering a deeper gameplay experience. It also features ranked play with ten skill tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger.

Arena

Arena is the newest permanent mode, introduced in December 2023. It features 8 players in 4 teams of 2 (2v2v2v2v2) in a round-based deathmatch format. You face different duos each round until one team remains.

Unlike other modes, Arena has a separate ranked system: Wood, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gladiator. It also includes Augments—power-ups that let you customize and enhance your champion. You choose a new Augment every few rounds, creating unique strategies every match.
