Unveiling the Thrilling Battlegrounds of LoL's Arena Mode: Strategy, Features, and Future
The League of Legends Arena is a game mode that pits four teams against each other, elimination style. The battle between players continues until there is only one team left standing. Within the Rings of Wrath, there are four different battlefields that each have their own size and theme dynamics.
Introducing the Arena

Riot Games and its crown jewel, League of Legends, launched Arena on July 20th, 2023, and is expected to run until August 28th, 2023. Players queue up in a blind pick that selects a champion. While in Arena mode, Runes are disabled but some keystone runes can be accessible by Augments.
Augments act as permanent buffs for a champion that can be accessed during the Shop Phase of the second round. It will then be offered every three rounds thereafter. These offer powerful stats that will affect the rest of your gameplay while battling it out in Arena mode.
The augments have three quality tiers, which are Silver, Gold, and Prismatic. Silver is the least effective augment while prismatic is the most effective. In total, there are 4 Shop Phases in a full game while in Arena mode. If players are not happy with what’s offered in Shop Phase upon their visit, they can roll up to two times in the game for a list of better shop items to choose from.
Since the Arena is based on the Soul Fighter universe, expect the possibility of cameo appearances made by the legendary champions from its realm. Going into Round 4, expect the likes of Evelynn, Gwen, Lux, Naafiri, Pyke, Samira, Sett, Shaco, and Viego to make a possible appearance as a neutral enemy to contend with.
The Features

The Flash feature will occupy one of the summoner spell slots, along with the Flee spell. Flee grants a forty percent bonus in movement speed for two seconds. This jumps by an additional 20% for each enemy champion you’re facing away from. This is a spell that can be exchanged with a unique spell granted by Augments.
As for the trinket slot, it’s occupied by Arcane Sweeper. This allows a player to summon a mist over the target location for five seconds. This gives you the advantage of sight of the area so you can learn about the enemy traps and have them disabled for the first two minutes of the game.
Also in the Arena are Power Flowers, a plant that occasionally spawns on the battlefield during gameplay. These are healers and stackable shields that offer 6% and 7.8% to a player’s maximum health, respectively. It also refunds 20% total cooldown time for the player upon the plant’s consumption.
Fire & Water

The Ring of Fire is a damaging area of effect that closes in from the edge of the Arena’s battlefield toward the center. Every thirty seconds after a combat round begins, this Ring of Spire spawns and then moves around in five-second intervals. This pattern continues every five seconds until it reaches the center.
Anyone caught outside the Ring of Fire takes a minimum of 6% True Damage. How much this chips away at maximum health depends on how many seconds the enemy has been caught outside the ring. As soon as the target moves back inside the ring, the burn will stop, and its damage reset. However, the burn damage won’t reset or be dished out if the target is either invulnerable or has reached a minimum health threshold while outside the ring.
Also in the Arena is Deep Water. This counts as a river element for Qiyana’s Terrashape’s element gathering. This removes the attack speed cap of the champions while at the same time granting them an Arena Stat Adjustments buff. These buffs allow defensive and offensive boosts while activated.
The Rounds
While in the Arena, the four teams involved play a series of rounds until there is only one team left. Each round features a Shop Phase and a Combat Phase. The beginning of the game has every champion set at Level 3 going into the first round. Each of them will gain 1.5 levels after surviving each round.
While in Arena mode, each team begins with 20 Team Health. While engaged in Combat Rounds, the team will first receive increments of 2 damage points for up to three rounds. Should it survive going into the fourth round, the damage points are increased to 4. This continues for a duration of three rounds. The seventh round will see another jump of 2 damage points, increasing the number to 6.
As soon as a team has been fully depleted of its health, they are eliminated from the game. From there, the surviving teams continue until there is only one left. Players from the eliminated team can either stick around to watch the rest of the match or leave without penalty. Should there be three teams remaining at any point during the game, one of them will be randomly selected at the start of a Shop Phase to be exempt from a Combat Phase.
The Matchups

While playing in Arena mode, the team matchups are determined by a round-robin bracket. During this time, players are not able to battle against the same team until all of the other teams have already been faced. However, the order may change with each round-robin as teams are eliminated in the process. While in Shop Phase, teams can view what their next matchup will be in the HUD.
The Arena’s HUD offers its own new scoreboard layout that shares the same features as LoL. The Game tab at the top of the screen features information on round phases and match phases. There are also countdowns, new matchups, and the status of each champion. The Team tab on the right side of the screen displayed Team Health, Team Logos, and their champions.
There are five tiers that sum up the Arena’s ranking system. Between Wood, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gladiator, players work their way up by scoring Ranking Points. These can only be achieved by placing first or second after a match has been played. Finishing third or fourth will cost ranking points unless it's a new player that hasn’t played their first five matches yet.
Going Shopping

At the start of the game and in between rounds, the Arena will spawn a Shop Phase. Players have 45 seconds to access everything it has to offer before the next round begins. If there is no need to use it, players can use this as an opportunity to beat up the Target Dummy as they wait.
While in Shop Phase, there is a health indicator that will show either a checkmark or a cross mark. This indicates the last Combat Phase’s roster of winners and losers. It also displayed which champions were killed in that same phase. Those will be greyed out. There is also a kill feed of all teams that will appear at this time.
As shoppers go over what’s available, there are four categories they can choose from. Starter Items and Tier 2 Boots cost 1000 gold each. Starter Items are highly recommended at the beginning of the game. These will help as the modifications offered help improve stats that will be useful later in the game.
Juices act as special combat boosts that grant special buffs for a single round. They cost 700 gold each. Players can buy and carry multiple different Juices that can be used in the same round.
The fourth category while in Arena mode is Full Items. These offer Legendary and Mythic items that cost 3000 gold each. They must be purchased as a whole set. There are no recipe components to work here. Many items are shared with typical items that currently exist in other LoL game modes.
LoL’s Arena in Review
The Arena was designed as a more intense approach for players to enjoy League of Legends. Instead of grinding away that can take several hours to go anywhere, the Arena mode behaves as a quicker approach for players to get things done.
LoL has been the pride and joy of Riot Games ever since it was launched as a massively multiplayer online game in 2009. It is one of the few games that have done more than just stand the test of time. It has grown to become one of the most popular video games running today.
What makes LoL so popular is its accessibility. It was among the first to introduce a free-to-play model to success. There was no price tag attached to this game when it was released. LoL relies on monetary transactions carried out by players who are into applying special cosmetics to their favorite characters in the game. For them, it’s all about desired aesthetics as these items have nothing to do with improved game performance.
Arena’s Future
Should the Soul Fighter edition of LoL’s Arena prove to be a success (which it already is so far), expect Riot Games to keep the momentum going. Additional arena modes will likely continue as game developers continue to reinvent the wheel where League of Legends is concerned. What’s great about Arena is the opportunity it provides new players who hadn’t tried LoL before to give it a go.
When a popular game such as LoL has already been running for over a decade, winning over a new roster of gamers isn’t easy to do. They’re going up against seasoned veterans who know how LoL works inside and out. Not every newcomer is up for the challenge, nor the grinding that would be involved to at least achieve a somewhat decent rank. At least with Arena, this is a quicker approach to enjoying League of Legends that is as entertaining as it is intense.
