Blue Ezreal LoL Classic Build: Elder Lizard

Blue Ezreal LoL Classic Build: Elder Lizard
Blue Ezreal LoL Classic Build: Elder Lizard

Blue Ezreal is the build that got Spirit of the Elder Lizard nerfed in the first place. It was a genuine flavour of the month back when this patch was live, it spread to half the Attack Damage roster, and it is back in League Classic exactly as annoying as it used to be.

It is also a build with one piece of buying discipline at its centre that most people get wrong, so I will lead with it rather than bury it in the item list.

TL;DR: buy the Tear early and do not upgrade it into Manamune yet. Tear's charge timer is shorter than Manamune's, so finishing the item early actively slows down the thing you bought it for. Sit on the Tear, buy Ionian Boots of Lucidity, then Iceborn Gauntlet, then Spirit of the Elder Lizard. Finish the Manamune once the Tear is done stacking.

The Tear Rule

This is the part nobody tells you.

The stacking timer on Tear of the Goddess is shorter than the one on Manamune. If you upgrade as soon as you can afford it, every stack from that point forward comes in slower, and you spend the entire mid game watching a bar fill at the wrong speed. The upgrade is not a reward, it is a downgrade to your stacking rate that happens to come with statistics attached.

So the correct sequence is: buy the Tear, keep buying other things, and only convert it once the stacking is finished or nearly finished. You lose nothing by waiting, because the Tear's mana is already working for you and the components you buy instead are doing more for your lane than a half-stacked Manamune would.

Stack it properly while you wait. Mystic Shot has a 4 second cooldown at rank 5, costs between 30 and 50 mana, and refunds a second of cooldown when it lands. There is no champion in the mode better suited to filling a Tear. Cast at the wave, cast at the enemy, cast at nothing in particular when you are walking back to lane. Every cast is a stack you do not have to grind for later.

Why Blue Ezreal Works

Everything in this build points at the same target: casting Mystic Shot as often as physically possible, and making each cast do more than it should.

Mystic Shot applies on hit effects. That is the load-bearing line of the whole build. It means Iceborn Gauntlet's Spellblade fires from 1200 units away, and it means the Elder Lizard burn applies from 1200 units away too.

Mystic Shot refunds cooldown on every ability when it hits. Stack cooldown reduction on top of that and the gap between casts collapses. This is why the build takes cooldown reduction from three separate sources instead of buying another damage item.

Mystic Shot has a 120% total Attack Damage ratio. Anything that gives you Attack Damage feeds it. Anything that gives you mana feeds the item that gives you Attack Damage later.

Put those together and you get a champion who is throwing a slowing, burning, Spellblade-empowered bolt across the screen every few seconds, from a range where nobody can meaningfully answer it.

Blue Ezreal LoL Classic Build: Item Order

Start. Doran's Blade and a Health Potion, or Boots and potions if you expect an aggressive lane. Buy the Tear on your first meaningful back.

1. Tear of the Goddess. Early, and then leave it alone. See above.

2. Ionian Boots of Lucidity. The cooldown reduction boots are not a luxury pick here, they are a build component. Every point of cooldown reduction compounds with the refund on Mystic Shot, and this build's damage is a function of how many times you cast, not how hard any single cast hits.

3. Iceborn Gauntlet. Armor, mana, cooldown reduction, and Spellblade. The Spellblade proc is the reason: it fires off Mystic Shot, which means a ranged ability now applies bonus physical damage and drops a slowing field on top of the target. You are a marksman who slows people from a screen away without ever entering their range. The mana on the item also stacks with everything else you are building.

4. Spirit of the Elder Lizard. Attack Damage, another 10% cooldown reduction, and the Incinerate passive: basic attacks and non-periodic spell damage burn the target for true damage over 3 seconds. True damage. Not reduced by Armor, not reduced by Magic Resist, not reduced by anything they can buy. And Mystic Shot applies it, so you are applying a true damage burn on a 4 second cooldown at 1200 range for the rest of the game.

This is the item that made the build famous and the reason it was eventually toned down. It is available here in its original form.

5. Manamune, finally. Once the Tear is stacked, convert it. The Attack Damage it gives scales off your mana pool, and by this point your mana pool is the largest thing about you.

6. Last slot, read the game. Last Whisper if they have bought Armor, and Mystic Shot's physical damage benefits from the penetration just like your autos do. Guardian Angel or Banshee's Veil if you keep getting deleted by one spell before you can do anything.

Skill order: Q, then E, then W. Q for all the obvious reasons. E second for the cooldown dropping from 17 seconds to 9, because on a 430 Health champion the blink is a defensive statistic. W last, though one early point is worth having for the Attack Speed cripple on the enemy carry.

Runes and Masteries

Same page as the Trinity Force build: Marks of Attack Damage, Seals of Armor, Glyphs of Magic Resist, Quintessences of Life Steal, with 21 offense and 9 utility.

The Life Steal quintessences are worth repeating because they surprise people. Mystic Shot benefits from Life Steal. Every Q you land from 1200 units away heals you, starting at level 1. On a build that casts as often as this one does, that is a sustain engine, not a rounding error.

The offensive masteries want the cooldown reduction, and the nine utility points cover mana regeneration and movement speed. Mana regeneration matters more here than on the Trinity build, because you are deliberately casting more often than your base mana pool would like in the first fifteen minutes.

How to Play It

Early lane is about stacking, not killing. You are building toward a spike, not opening with one. Cast Q at everything you can safely cast it at. Last hit with it when the wave allows. Poke when the enemy carry steps up. Your damage in the first ten minutes is fine but unremarkable, and that is expected.

Watch your mana anyway. Arcane Shift costs 90 mana and it is your only escape. The temptation with a Tear in your inventory is to spam until you are empty, which works right up until a jungler arrives and you have nothing left to blink with.

Mid game is where the build turns on. Once Iceborn Gauntlet and Elder Lizard are finished, every Mystic Shot is doing three jobs at once: physical damage from the ratio, bonus damage and a slow field from Spellblade, and a true damage burn from Incinerate. Against a target with no Magic Resist and modest Armor, that adds up to a lot more than the tooltip suggests.

Fight at range and slow everything. You are not a burst carry in this build, you are a persistent one. The slow field means your team gets to catch people, and the burn means tanky targets do not simply shrug off your poke. Stand at maximum range, keep pressing Q, and stay behind whichever teammate the enemy would rather be hitting.

Trueshot Barrage is still a map ability. Global range, 120 second cooldown at rank 1, and damage that decays to 30% after the first target. Use it to finish a kill across the map or into an objective fight, not as a fifth damage button in a scrum.

Blue Ezreal Versus Trinity Force Ezreal

Both builds are correct and they want different games.

Trinity Force is the aggressive version. It comes online faster in a fight, it hits harder in a single burst window, and it wants you to be the one applying pressure in the bot lane from minute fifteen.

Blue Ezreal is the scaling version. It gives up early burst for cooldown reduction, true damage, a slow field on a ranged ability, and a mana pool that eventually converts into Attack Damage. It is better against tanky compositions, because true damage and applied-every-four-seconds pressure do not care how much Armor a front line bought.

If your team already has burst and needs consistent damage that ignores resistances, build Blue. If your team needs someone to actually kill a carry in a short window, build Trinity Force.

What Changed From Live Ezreal

  • Mystic Shot's cooldown refund is a flat 1 second across all abilities here, which is what makes the cooldown reduction stacking worth it.

  • Essence Flux cripples enemy Attack Speed and buffs allies, and has no relationship to the modern detonate mechanic.

  • Spirit of the Elder Lizard does not exist in modern League at all. Neither does this version of Iceborn Gauntlet. The build is not off meta, it is from a meta that was deleted.

  • Trueshot Barrage decays per target and costs far more cooldown than modern players expect.

Who Should Play This

Play Blue Ezreal if you are comfortable with a build that asks for patience, if you like doing damage that resistances cannot answer, and if you enjoy the specific pleasure of slowing somebody from 1200 units away while they try to walk into your team.

Do not play it if the game is going to be decided in the first fifteen minutes, or if your team has already drafted three scaling picks. This is the version of Ezreal that wins the twenty five minute game.
