Akali LoL Classic Build: Six Miserable Levels, Then You Win

Akali LoL Classic Build: Six Miserable Levels, Then You Win

Akali is live in League Classic today, and she is the furthest from her modern self of anything in the mode so far. Not "some numbers changed." A structurally different champion who happens to share a name and a pair of kamas.

She arrives on her June 2012 kit, which is her original release version. Circular Twilight Shroud, a simple spin on E, three charges of Shadow Dance, and a passive that turns Attack Damage into spell vamp and Ability Power into on hit damage.

TL;DR: Marks of Magic Penetration, Seals of Armor, Glyphs of Magic Resist, Quintessences of flat Ability Power, 21 offense and 9 defense. Max Q, then E, then W. Rush Hextech Gunblade, which is not negotiable, then Mejai's Soulstealer if the game is going your way. The combo is Q, R, E, and it should already be dead.

The Kit

Passive. Bonus Attack Damage grants spell vamp. Bonus Ability Power grants on hit magic damage. Both halves at once, which is why the hybrid item at the top of your build order is the correct first buy rather than a nostalgia pick.

Q, Mark of the Assassin. Throws a kama for magic damage and marks the target. Your basic attacks or Crescent Slash against a marked target detonate it for a second chunk of magic damage and restore energy. This is your poke, your last hitting tool, your primary damage, and your resource management, all on one button.

W, Twilight Shroud. The circular version. A smoke cloud that grants vision, stealths Akali inside it, gives her bonus Armor and Magic Resist, and slows enemies standing in it. Vision Wards reveal her.

E, Crescent Slash. A simple spin dealing physical damage that scales from both Attack Damage and Ability Power. It also detonates the Q mark, which matters when the target is inside E range but you cannot land a basic attack.

R, Shadow Dance. Single target dash and damage, storing up to three charges. This is the ability that makes her, and it is also why she is a completely different champion before and after level 6.

The design note worth knowing. Riot explicitly chose not to use the version where E procs Q, because they wanted this Akali incentivised to auto attack rather than play like a mage. That decision shapes every item recommendation below.

Hextech Gunblade Is the Item

There is no debate here and there was none in 2012 either.

Look at the passive again. Bonus Attack Damage gives you spell vamp. Bonus Ability Power gives you on hit magic damage. Gunblade is the only item in the shop that pays into both halves at once, and it does it while also carrying Life Steal, spell vamp of its own, and an active that damages and slows.

That active is not decorative. It is a gap closer substitute, a slow to hold a target in place before you commit Shadow Dance charges, and extra burst inside your combo. Against a target just out of Q range, opening with the Gunblade active and then starting the rotation is the standard play.

Build Hextech Revolver first, early. The spell vamp turns your lane phase from survivable into comfortable, and Akali's lane before level 6 is genuinely difficult.

Akali LoL Classic Build: Full Order

Start. Doran's Blade and a Health Potion. Attack Damage feeds the passive spell vamp and makes your last hitting less miserable. Boots and potions are the safer alternative into an aggressive lane.

  1. Hextech Revolver into Hextech Gunblade. Explained above. Get the Revolver on your first back if you can.

  2. Mejai's Soulstealer, if you are ahead. It is cheap and this build is designed to accumulate kills, so a stacked Mejai's is more Ability Power per gold than anything else available. The risk is real and so is the payoff. If you are not winning, skip it and take a normal item instead. That is the honest version.

  3. Sorcerer's Shoes, or Mercury's Treads when the enemy has the crowd control to end you, which is most compositions with any hard control at all.

  4. Rabadon's Deathcap. Multiplies everything, including the on hit damage from your passive.

  5. Rylai's Crystal Scepter or Zhonya's Hourglass. Rylai's applies its slow from Mark of the Assassin, so every poke sticks the target in place. Zhonya's is the answer when you are dying to a specific champion mid combo.

  6. Void Staff when they have bought Magic Resist, Guardian Angel or Banshee's Veil when one spell landing on you decides the fight.

Skill order: Q, then E, then W, with R at 6, 11, and 16.

Q first is not a debate. It is your damage, your poke, your farm, and your energy economy. Every rank makes all four better at once.

E second because it is your wave clear and your secondary detonation method. W last, though take one point early, around level 2 or 3, because the stealth and slow save games long before the extra ranks matter.

Runes and Masteries

Same page I run on AP Tristana, and for the same reasons.

Marks of Magic Penetration. Flat penetration matters more than raw AP against targets sitting on base Magic Resist, which is everybody in the first fifteen minutes.

Seals of Armor. You are melee. This is not optional.

Glyphs of Magic Resist. You are usually standing opposite a mage and you are extremely fragile.

Quintessences of flat Ability Power. These make your level 1 and 2 numbers real, which matters enormously on a champion whose early damage is otherwise entirely item dependent.

Masteries: 21 offense, 9 defense. Offense for the magic penetration, cooldown reduction, and percentage Ability Power. The nine defensive points exist because you are a melee assassin with 445 base Health who walks into range of everything. Utility is defensible if you plan to roam heavily, but Akali's escape is already in her kit twice.

Laning Phase, Which Is Genuinely Hard

I want to be straight about this rather than sell you a fantasy. Akali's lane before level 6 is one of the worst in the mode.

You are melee, you are fragile, and until Shadow Dance exists you have no reliable way to reach anyone who does not want to be reached. Every experienced Akali player will tell you the same thing: the early game is about farming and not dying, not about winning trades.

What you actually do:

Use Q to last hit. Throw the kama at a minion and auto attack it immediately. The mark detonates, the minion dies, and you get energy back. This is how you farm without walking into the enemy laner's range, and it is why Q is your first max.

Poke with Q when it is free. Mark of the Assassin does not pull minion aggro, so you can throw it at the enemy champion inside their own wave and walk away. Detonate with an auto if you can safely reach, otherwise let the damage sit.

Watch your energy. Akali runs on 200 energy and she is famously thirsty. The detonation refund is what keeps you casting, so a Q that never gets detonated is close to wasted resource. Do not spam abilities into nothing.

Twilight Shroud is not a farming tool. You can drop it to clear safely, and people do. But the moment you spend it, you are a melee squishy in a lane with no escape until it returns. If the enemy jungler is unaccounted for, keep it.

Then level 6 arrives and the champion changes. With Shadow Dance charges in hand you can cross a gap you previously could not, and the same lane opponent who was bullying you becomes a target.

The Combo

The rotation is simple and it has not changed since 2012.

Q, wait for the mark, R in, E to detonate. Against most squishies that is the entire interaction. If they survive, you have more Shadow Dance charges, and the Gunblade active plus another Q usually finishes it.

Variations worth knowing:

  • Out of Q range? Open with the Gunblade active for the slow, then Q, then the rest.

  • Cannot auto attack the marked target? E detonates the mark from 325 range. That is what the ability is really for.

  • Committed and losing? Twilight Shroud into a Shadow Dance charge on a minion is a genuine escape, provided nobody has a Vision Ward nearby.

The discipline part: do not spend all three Shadow Dance charges getting in. Charges are your exit as much as your entry, and an Akali standing in the middle of a teamfight with zero charges is just a very expensive minion.

What Beats You

Vision Wards. This is the big one. Twilight Shroud is a large part of your safety and a 75 gold pink ward deletes it. Assume a competent enemy support has one.

Hard crowd control. Stuns, fears, and silences are Akali's oldest weakness. You have no crowd control of your own and no tenacity beyond boots. One stun landing mid combo is the whole fight.

Early aggression. Anyone who can pressure a melee champion before level 6 will do exactly that. Accept it, farm, and wait.

What Changed From Modern Akali

Almost everything.

  • The passive is a hybrid stat converter here. Modern Akali's passive is about her Q mark and empowered attacks.

  • Twilight Shroud is circular, static, and grants resistances. Modern Akali's shroud is a completely different tool with different rules about revealing her.

  • Crescent Slash is a simple spin. Modern Akali's E is a projectile and a recast dash.

  • Shadow Dance stores three charges and is your primary mobility. Modern Akali's mobility lives largely in her other abilities.

  • She wants to auto attack. That is the entire point of the version Riot picked, and it is the habit modern Akali players will find hardest to build.

Who Should Play This

Play her if you enjoy champions with a difficult early game and an enormous payoff, and if you are willing to farm quietly for six levels before the champion starts existing. When she works, she deletes a carry in under a second and leaves through a smoke cloud.

Do not play her if you need to win lane to feel useful, or if the enemy team is full of hard crowd control. She is one of the most punishing picks in the mode and one of the most rewarding.
