Cyberpunk 2077 vs. Starfield: A Comparative Analysis

Which game is better between Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield?  This has been a subject for debate among members of the gaming community ever since Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks officially released Starfield on September 6, 2023.  Cyberpunk 2077 was first released by CD Projekt Red on December 10, 2020.  What the two have in common is a futuristic world that caters to the fan base of science fiction.

Cyberpunk 2077’s World vs. Starfield’s World

With Cyberpunk 2077, there is no flights out into outer space like Starfield.  This is a grounded game set in a post-apcalyptic world.  Every action taken place is done on Earth, or to be more specific, California.

With Starfield, the game is focused on traveling in outer space that has players visit planets and outposts.  Like Cyberpunk, it does have a city.  With Cyberpunk, it’s Night City.  With Starfield, it’s New Atlantis.  Both are set in futuristic timelines and both have an incredible collection of things to explore and do that are designed to keep the game fun.  However, unlike Cyberpunk, its not the only city in the game.  Players can head off to visit other cities that are either located on other planets or as the heart and soul of an outpost.

In all honesty, gamers can’t really compare Cyberpunk 2077 to Starfield as a game when it comes to how their platforms are set up. They can, however, compare how one performs compared to the other.  Those performances include gameplay mechanics and storyline structure.  Although the worlds between Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield are very different from each other, the concept of working through a storyline as the game progresses is generally the same.

Can We Compare?

Starfield received generally positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for its open world, setting, and soundtrack, though the story and exploration divided critics.  The sales figures have been impressive and the fans of the game keep coming back for more.  However, it has also received a great deal of criticism by some members who’ve addressed concerns such as bugs, gaps, and other performance issues.

As for Cyberpunk 2077, the game didn’t get off to such a grand start as it met with a series of issues that looked like as if CD Projekt Red released an epic failure that wasn’t going to survive as a game for long.  There were even demands for refunds and lawsuit threats.  However, thanks to the development team and modders, things turned around for Cyberpunk 2077 that has made it become one of the most popular games going right now.

Between Cyberpunk 2077and Starfield, the only thing these two have in common is the futuristic timeline they have.  Granted, they’re both shooters.  However, Cyberpunk 2077 deals with an in-depth storyline of a character who is out for their brand of justice.  With Starfield, it’s about saving humanity.  Although both games do share a main quest storyline as well as a series of side quests, these are very different games from each other.

Where Modders Fit In

As is the case with many video games, there are modders who come up with files in an effort to fill in whatever gaps developers seemed to have missed.  Usually, these modders are considered a blessing by gamers.  The best at their craft will come up with better graphics and better gameplay experiences than what the original development team came up with.  Fans of Bethesda’s Skyrim who’ve benefited from the thousands of mods in that game are anxious to see what’s in store for Starfield.

In the case of Cyberpunk 2077, fans of that game have enjoyed new dynamics to the game that has made it far more entertaining and playable for them.  Starfield isn’t quite there yet but the modders are already on the job to make this happen as well.  When looking into how modders will play a factor with both games, comparing Cyberpunk 2077 with Starfield is like comparing an apple with an orange.

Should modders repeat the same formula in Starfield that was used in Skyrim, expect Starfield to have infinite possibilities of what can be done.  Granted, Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t fall short on possibilities either.  Among the best modders in the gaming community, they can virtually come up with a brand new game inside another game that can give it so much more value.

Apples vs. Oranges

When it comes to choosing between Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield, it boils down to personal preferences.  Gamers who love the open world experience are going to favor Starfield without hesitation.  While Cyberpunk 2077 also has an open world environment, there is a difference between exploring its Night City to a game that has over one thousand planets and outposts to visit.

What Cyberpunk 2077 has going for it is the grungy feel of an environment for gamers experiencing a post apocalyptic California.  What’s going against it is there are still a few too many bugs that have yet to be resolved.  Overall, however, it’s enjoyable enough to last more than just a few short years as a fan favorite game.

Starfield’s best qualities, so far, has been the open world environment that lets players do whatever they want.  There are members of the gaming community that would rather focus on missions and nothing more.  Starfield allows them to do exactly that.  On the same note, there are also gamers who love to explore every corner they can find.  Starfield offers this opportunity in abundance.  But then again, so does Cyberpunk 2077.  Again, it comes down to personal preferences.

In the end, Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield are both well made games by the development teams involved.  Were both games released perfect?  Between the two, Starfield definitely got off to a much better start than Cyberpunk 2077 did.  It took CD Projekt Red’s game nearly a year before enough of the kinks were kicked out that made it user-friendly.

As for Starfield, while the game didn’t stumble nearly as bad out of the starting gate as Cyberpunk 2077 did, it’s not without its fair share of issues, either.  It didn’t take long after it was publicly released for complaints to pile in by frustrated players who found Starfield had too many bugs as well.  Some of those complaints included travel times and inventory issues.  Among the biggest issues shared by gamers was the inability to complete certain actions one moment then able to do so the next.  There was no rhyme or reason for it, which would frustrate any gamer.

Just like Cyberpunk 2077, the team behind Starfield are hard at work to fix as many bugs as they learn about as possible.  Among gamers who have more patience than others, they don’t seem to mind too much.  As for the rest, they refuse to touch Starfield much like how so many gamers refused to touch Cyberpunk 2077.  They want to wait until the majority of the bugs are worked out before they attempt to give it a serious go.

Personally speaking, Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield are both great games that offer so many possibilities to keep players entertained for years.  Thanks to modders, they keep the game exciting as players wait between expansion packs.  Between Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield, which one is actually the better game depends entirely on how gamers wish to play them.
