League Classic Is Ending on January 6, 2027. Here's What That Actually Means

Riot announced on October 14 that League Classic's current run ends with Season 3 on January 6, 2027, about five months after the mode launched on July 29. Matchmade Classic queues go offline, custom matches stay available in every region, refunds are coming for Classic content that becomes unusable, and Riot says the goal is to bring Classic back later, likely as an event mode with adjustments.

I have spent the last three months writing build guides for this mode, so believe me when I say I read the dev post twice hoping I had misread it. I had not. Here is everything in it, what happens to your Classic grind, and what I think Riot got right and wrong.

What Riot Announced

The dev post from Paul "Pabro" Bellezza and Andrei "Meddler" van Roon says the quiet part plainly: a lot of players had fun revisiting the old game, and most of them have since gone back to other parts of League. In some regions that migration got bad enough to cause long queues and wide matchmaking gaps.

So the current season is Classic's last. Riot's words are that they will "put Classic back in the box for now," with the goal of bringing it back, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions. Think Arena's on-and-off history rather than a permanent fifth queue.

The Timeline Between Now and January 6

Right now: nothing changes. Classic plays exactly as it did yesterday, and new champions keep arriving until the end of the run.

Patch 26.21: the wind-down starts.

  • The Act II Classic Battle Pass ships with a free track only. No paid track means no new paid Classic content to buy into a dying mode, which is the correct call.

  • The Classic store gets trimmed to Champions, Runes and Rune Pages.

  • Japan and MENA move to custom-matches only from 26.21, and some other regions get limited time windows for matchmade Classic instead of all-day queues.

January 6, 2027: matchmade Classic ends everywhere as Season 3 closes.

After January 6: custom matches stay available in all regions, so the mode is not deleted, just unqueued.

The Refunds

Riot is issuing refunds for Classic-specific content that will no longer be usable after the run ends. The dev post does not publish the full item-by-item list, so do not assume everything Classic-flagged qualifies. If you bought Classic content recently, watch the official page for the detailed refund terms rather than trusting a summary, mine included.

What we can already say from the 26.21 store change: Champions, Runes and Rune Pages are the things Riot is keeping purchasable, which suggests they expect those to retain value in custom matches and any future return.

My Honest Read

Two things are true at once here.

The decision makes sense. A matchmade queue needs players, and Riot's own numbers apparently show the tourists went home. Nostalgia modes always spike and decay, and keeping dead queues alive just makes the remaining players' matchmaking worse. Turning Classic into a returning event, the way Arena comes and goes, is the honest version of what the player curve was already saying.

The execution deserves the criticism it is getting. Players spent five months asking for a proper ranked mode and faster matchmaking fixes, and plenty of them believe the mode was never given the tools to retain anyone past the nostalgia hit. Riot itself admits in the post that it wants to examine "where sticking too closely to the past may have held the experience back." That is a sentence you write when you already know the answer.

For what it is worth, the mode Riot ships in a future return will probably be better for it. The champion release cadence was genuinely fun. The matchmaking was not.

What to Finish Before January 6

If you have been playing Classic, you have about twelve weeks of matchmade queues left, less in regions moving to time windows at 26.21. Priorities, in order:

  1. Finish your Summoner's Journey and leveling goals now, while queues are still global and all-day. Once 26.21 hits, some regions only get windows.

  2. Clear the Act I pass before it rotates. Act II is free-track only, so claim what you have earned.

  3. Play the champions you never got to. New champions keep arriving until the end, and the whole roster moves to custom-only in January.

  4. Spend your Classic Pass Coins. Do not sit on event currency in a mode with an end date.

If the grind is the problem, our Summoner's Journey boost, Classic leveling and Classic Swift Pass services run until the mode does, and Classic Pro Games are the way to play the old Rift with genuinely strong players before it goes. To be clear about the obvious: these services end when matchmade Classic does, so if you want something finished, the time to order it is not December 30.

What Happens to Your Main Account

Nothing. Classic lives inside your regular League account, so your main game progress, champions and skins are untouched. If Classic's ending has you drifting back to the live game, that is where your Classic habits transfer best: LoL boosting for the rank push, LoL coaching if five months of 2013-era wave management left some habits to unlearn, and the LoL accounts marketplace if you want a fresh start or a second region.

Will Classic Come Back?

Riot says that is the goal, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions, and it has promised a learnings post covering where Classic went right and wrong. No date, no cadence, no promise it looks the same. My bet: it returns the way Arena does, in runs, and the version that returns is less stubbornly faithful to 2013. We will cover it when it happens.

Stay tuned. Hollow, out.
